ok, it was the ezmlm-idx version i was using.... upgraded to
ezmlm-idx-5.0.2-7 and list archiving and indexing is working.

problem now is that ezmlm-www still complains about the missing
Encode.pmmodule when trying to view the messages.

i thought ezmlm-www 1.4.2 did not require the perl Encode moddule ?
