Actually mod_perl itself has nothing to do with this. That code snippet
I supplied as an example just populates the $lists arrayref with
database rows. If you want to use other sources, just write your code
and build the $lists arrayref as well. No mod_perl is involved here:
just plain Perl code to achieve the task you want.

Searching can be automated, as long as you provide 'search' and
'search_dir' options in $lists. OTOH, the ez_indexer.pl script isn't
very automation-oriented, because it doesn't use an external
configuration file. However you're free to modify it to do so. Also, its
behaviour is influenced by the --create and the --update options, so you
may require an additional script to first create the index.

ezmlm-www is simple enough to let everyone write their custom Perl
additions (or hire a consultant) without much hassle.
