I'm having problems with assigning local roles in xuf.
My xuf-protected folder is authenticating against a
database using an ODBC connection and works fine,
except if I click local roles in the Security section,
I get len() of unsized object, and debugging shows the
problem is with Role.py, specifically
get_valid_userids. When I test with ZODB
authentication, things work as expected. I'm using
usAuthentication methods based on the file provided in
xuf's Extensions directory. My acl_users folder is at
the same level of the content I'm protecting, which
hasn't caused any other problems.
Also, a Zope user defined in a parent or root folder,
even with Manager role, cannot log into the xuf
protected folder, even using URL xuf_folder/manage. I
guess that makes sense, since the xuf area is getting
its users out of a different data store.

It's a bit of a long shot, but try (on a COPY of your Zope instance) XUF
from CVS. Its core has been heavily modded for correctness wrt local
roles and such. It has just not been released as a beta yet because
I've been awfully busy with other stuff, regrettably.
