I managed to get 34 herrings in 0.7.2. Pretty difficult. I have no idea how to find 42 herrings.
Note that you have plenty of time to complete this track, so it is a good idea to go slow to don't miss anything.
Here's how I do it: At the start, grab the first herring, then go immediately to the left. Then go through the small chasm, over the ramps. Follow the path until you get to the ice canals. In the ice canals, try to stay left. At the end, at the abysses, you can find at least 4 more herrings. You have to try a few times until you find a way. Press and hold the jump key to jump over the abyss.
This is probably not the perfect solution, since the game claims I can even get 42 herrings (no idea how).

I've tried to map all the herrings. I think there is only one way to get 34 herrings, and no way to get more without some serious uphill climbing. I couldn't follow Wuzzy's advice but it is to go all the way left at the beginning, then stay left for the super-narrow channel, then follow some jumps staying all the way left. . Then you get 9 herrings in a row on a slope before arriving at at some wider valleys. Here, take the valley straight ahead (ie the left most). You have some branches which connect various valleys left and right. Take a left branch and then the right branch, or the right branch and then the left branch, which gets you 2 herrings in each section. At the bottom of that, you go up a slope and then stay left of the jump (ramp). Now you can easily find 3 more (1 and then 2) on the way to the finish, weaving above the chasms.
The problem is, once I successfully finished the Swiss Cup, nothing happens: I don't get access to any other competitions!! :(

I can't get through "Swiss Cup"/"Path of Daggers". I guess I catch too few herrings, 24 of 34. IMHO it's impossible.
