When I mount an Ext2 partition I am able to access it from the shell, but it doen't show up in the finder. is there a way to access it from the finder or other GUI apps?

If you use mount_ext2 manually (which I assume you are), then you must notify the disk manager that the mount has occurred. To do so, run the following after the mount:

      disktool -r

Alternatively, use the ExtFS Manager pref pane to do the mount, it will handle the disk manager notification.

the partition isn't  showing up in the finder even after disktool -r

When I attempt to use the preference pane, I get an error:
        Command: Mount
        Device: disk0s3
        Message: Unknown Error
        Error: 0x1FFFFFFF

Well, if disktool -r is not working, then there is some problem with the system disk manager. Check your /var/log/system.log file for any errors.

As for the pref pane error. That happens when the system disk manager fails to mount the drive. Usually this is because the drive is not clean. So run fsck_ext2 -fy on it to make sure there are no problems.
