I am having this incident too. I got the harddisk out of my linux server and tried to mount it via a USB casing. When I enter 'mount /dev/disk3s1 /Volumes/disk3' in the Terminal, it says something about a bad magic number.

I encounter a similar issue. I have a 160GB HD that was once in a Linux machine but is now in a portable enclosure. It's got a 40GB EXT3 partition on it with a bunch of files I'd like to move to my Mac so that I can use the entire drive in the enclosure.
When I try to mount the partition under ExtFSManager, I get:
Command: Mount
Device: disk2s1
Message: The filesystem may need repair. Please user Disk Utility to check the filesystem.
Error: 0x1FFFFFFF
I have checked the partition using another Linux machine and it checks out fine and is readable. A FAT32 partition on the same HD operates without a problem.

Same issue here but with an ext2 partition on an external 500G usb harddrive. Tried changing Linux_ext2fs to Linux as noted in another thread but it made no difference.

I've got it working now...
Don't know what hepls, but I've done all 3.
1. Replaced lilo with grub (for nice startup graphics, I love opensuse bootsplash).
2. Removed rEFIt. (I don't need it - GRUB 0.97 on /dev/sda3 works fine for triple boot).
3. Activated linux partition in MBR via linux fdisk. (guess this one, but can't say for sure).
