XPL will have to, no question.
At the moment, the best way to address the issue is to look at the
XSLT
literature (I'm starting with www.w3.org/XML, myself), and try to see
how you would make XSLT variables serve the purpose.
Also, you might look into the archive for this group, for a post
titled:
"[xpl] Variable = Container = Element ... = Directory?", 05/16/00.
That was my thoughts on what should be in XPL variables.
