We then have a closer look at some occasions when these people use the expressions programs. We hope this will help us to develop good software ;-) \end{abstract} \section{Personas} \label{sec:personas} This section describes four people: some facts about their personal background, about their cell phones and computers, and about how they use the Internet. In the next sections, we will look at how the expressions programs can help these people. \subsection{A media student who wants to start blogging} \label{sec:personas:eric} \emph{Eric} is 19 years old and just started a degree in media. He doesn't have a cell phone, even though all his friends are urging him to finally go and get one, so that they can contact him. He thinks he doesn't need a cell phone, because he's either at the media school (where he's not allowed to use his cell phone anyway), or at home (where they could call him on his landline phone or use instant messaging to chat with him), or with some of his friends (who all have a cell phone, so he doesn't need one himself). Eric's a little bit of an Internet addict, and his computer is always online. What he most likes to do when he's online is use instant messaging while reading blogs. He's actually quite fascinated by blogging. After he's been reading blogs for several years, he has now finally decided to set up his own blog. For using his blog, Eric doesn't want to use a web interface, but would like to be able to use the blog from his desktop computer. He doesn't know anything about web services or the internals of a computer. Due to the influence of a friend who's studying computer science, he would like to use open source software, even though his computer has Microsoft Windows as operating system. \subsection{A fiction writer with a camera cell phone} \label{sec:personas:daniel} \emph{Daniel} is a fiction writer who recently turned 45. He owns a nice new cell phone that has a built-in camera, and an old laptop. Both have IR capabilities. The laptop is running Linux that a friend set up for him so that he doesn't have to worry while using the Internet. He's really glad about that because he really only uses the laptop for browsing the web and as an advanced typewriter. He doesn't have a desktop computer. Even though he bought the laptop so that he can work in his favorite caf\'e;, he has realised that he's way too distracted there to be really productive. Because of that, he usually works at home. Sometimes he visits his editor, but even then he doesn't bring his laptop, as they prefer to work with a printout of his text anyway. To stay in contact with his friends, Daniel writes lots of text messages, and in general he uses his cell phone more than his landline. Some months ago, he has set up a blog where he sometimes posts unfinished parts of plots to let people comment on it. Occasionally, he takes pictures with the camera of interesting things which he belives will help him with his writing (for example, settings or people who have appearances which he could use to describe charcters). He usually also posts these pictures to his blog. \subsection{An insurance agent who travels a lot} \label{sec:personas:sarah} \emph{Sarah} is an insurance agent and 39 years old. She's divorced and has one daughter, who she is very fond of. She spends a lot of time travelling around to see customers. When travelling, she stays in motels overnight. Sarah has a laptop for work that she's also using as her home computer. The laptop is serviced by the IT guys at her company, which she thinks is good because she doesn't (nor wants to) know much about computers. The laptop is running Microsoft Windows, but the techies have told her that it probably won't get any viruses while using the Internet because they have installed some software that will protect her computer. She usually goes online with her laptop when she's at a motel (and several times a day when she's at home) to synchronise work-related documents and to read her e-mail. Her really old cell phone doesn't support anything except for making phone calls -- it doesn't even have T9 (she's not allowed to use the fancy company cell phone for anything not related to work), so she hardly ever uses it. Her 19 year old daughter just moved 300 km away from Sarah to start uni, and she's started a blog to write about all the exciting new things she's seeing. When Sarah is online, she usually also checks whether her daughter has written something new. Sarah really likes cats and has a digital camera she's always carrying around to take pictures of cats in funny situation and of cats in general. She used to send these pictures around via e-mail to a colleague, to her best friend and to her daughter, but her best friend doesn't check mail very often and has complained about the attachments taking up all the space in her mailbox. So now her daughter has helped her set up a blog on her own to post these pictures to. In addition to that, she has also started to post reviews of the caf\'es and motels she's been to while travelling. \subsection{A gadget geek studying computer science} \label{sec:personas:anna} \emph{Anna} is 24 years old and currently working on her PhD in computer science. She always wants the latest gadgets, and earns enough to buy them. So she's got a smartphone (a combination of a cell phone and a PDA) with a camera. Her laptop is an Apple Powerbook with all the cool accessories. At home, she's got a nice G5 desktop. All these gadgets can communicate using Bluetooth, which she uses to syncronise notes, contacts and calendar items between all three devices. Anna has a personal blog, and another one where the writes about rumours and news about new gadgets. She runs the gadget blog together with a few friends. Anna sends plenty of MMS (multimedia text messages) and uses VoIP -- she doesn't have a landline at all because it is too old fashioned. When travelling, she either uses hotspots with her laptop, or uses the smartphone as a modem. When travelling to different activites, she normally doesn't bring the laptop but just the smartphone. \section{Stories} \label{sec:stories} The previous section introduced four persons. In this section, we will have a closer look at how these four persons use the expressions programs. \end{document} |
