Hi! I have no idea if any of the adresses here are still in use, but let's try :-) It has been a while since I last arranged or played Galaxy so I think it is about time now. So I will arrange a game for anyone interested to participate. So anyone interested in playing a nice game of Galaxy explorer, please send me st...@ac... a mail with galaxy in the subject. This is not a binding signup or so, just to see if there is any interest out there and if any of the email-adresses on this list are still alive. In a week or so I'll send a further mail with information about where the game will run, signup, judge and game-engine emails, the planned schedule for the game and any options used. The goal is to have at least 16 players, but the more the merrier. Best regards /Jan-Olof Flink |

Hello there I would greatly appreciate a small amount of your time to assist with my doctoral research at The University of Newcastle. The research concerns open source licensing and we're seeking developers working on Java projects. The research is supervised, ethics-approved, anonymous and results will be freely available. Participation will also provide a custom licensing report for your project. To learn more, please visit: http://licensing-research.newcastle.edu.au Thanks for reading this email, and I hope you'll consider participating. Best regards Ben Alex (My apologies for being off-topic; this list will not be emailed again) |

Hi everybody, This messages reaches you because you once expressed interest in playing a Galaxy Explorer game, or indeed did this once or more times. The time of awakening is coming again. A new Galaxy Explorer game Chaeronea will start in early January. The rules are simple and straight, as they were in the past games of Marathon and Thermopylae: you'll get one home world, you won't know how many races are out there or what size the galaxy has, and there will be only one winning criterion: total annihilation of all alien races but yours. If you care to join, please reply to this mail, keeping the word "Chaeronea" in the subject line. Tell me what address you're going to use for the game and what turn frequency you prefer. The usual plan is to have a week of 1 turn per day, then three-five weeks of three turns per week, and finally 2 turns per week till the end of time. The Judge will not be playing in this game. In case you want to learn more about Galaxy Explorer, visit http://explorer.sourceforge.net . If you want to know more about the battle of Chaeronea, go to http://college.hmco.com/history/readerscomp/mil/html/mh_009100_chaeroneabat.htm Best regards. Alexander |

Hi everybody, I'm happy to tell you that the countdown to the fierce highlander Galaxy Explorer game of Thermopylae starts now. We plan to generate the galaxy and send out the initial turn reports by Friday next week, with the view on procesing the first turn on Monday, November 15. If you've not applied for this game yet, you have time till 12:00 GMT of Wednesday, November 10. After that, all registered players will receive a confirmation message from the ga...@ne... to their registered game address, and the signup will be closed. New engine version 2.10 will be used for running the game. As announced earlier, both winning criteria will be switched off, and the galaxy size and the number of players will be for you to find out. The can only be one winner. To make limit guessing difficult, global mail will be switched off, all players will be assigned random initial names (like Player_XY), and the initial names of the visible planets will all look like Axy, with A0 being the respective player's home. Now it's time to update and check your GalaxyChart installation. It can be pumped off the Galaxy Explorer project site at the Source Forge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/explorer). The engine source code can be found there as well, but only the judge will need it. You'll find all the necessary information about the game at the primary Galaxy Explorer site (http://explorer.sourceforge.net) and links therefrom, among which I rather immodestly recommend my Explorer page (http://home.foni.net/~supalov/explorer). Best regards. Alexander |

Hi everybody, Thermopilae ranks are filling up fast. Please consider signing up if you want to participate in this furious highlander game where only one will survive. If any of you tried to sign up between October 3 and 14 and didn't get any reply from me yet, please be so kind to resend your application: I had a strange mail delivery issue that was resolved of late by the ISP. Just to remind you: this will be an absolutely blind game of the kind of Marathon. The number of planets and players will be for you to find out. The size of the galaxy will be kept secret until someone starts seeing the whole of the map. In addition to this, an extra twist will be trown in: all the winning criteria but the total elimination of all other life forms will be switched off. In case you want to join, please send a message to su...@fo... with the word Thermopylae in the subject line (just replying to this message is fine, too). I'd also like to know your email address in case it's different from the one the message comes from, and the preferred turn frequency. Best regards. Alexander |

Hi everybody, The time has come: a new Galaxy Explorer highlander game Thermopylae starts forming now. This will be an absolutely blind game of the kind of Marathon: the number of planets and players will be for you to find out. The size of the galaxy will be kept secret until someone starts seeing the whole of the map. In addition to this, I contemplate one extra twist: switching off all the winning criteria but the total elimination of all other life forms. In case you want to join, please send a message to su...@fo... with the word Thermopylae in the subject line (just replying to this message is fine). I'd also like to know your email address in case it's different from the one the message comes from, the preferred turn frequency, and your opinion regarding the aforementioned extra twist. Best regards. Alexander P.S. This is what MS Encarta says about this legendary battle: Thermopylae, Battle of, battle fought between the Greeks and the Persians at Thermopylae, in northern Greece, in 480 BC. It was the first major battle fought during the invasion of Greece that the Persian king, Xerxes, led between 480 and 479 BC. Although it ended in victory for the Persians, the battle is noted primarily for the bravery shown by the Greeks and, in particular, by the Spartans and their king, Leonidas. As with the earlier Battle of Marathon, modern knowledge of the Battle of Thermopylae depends almost entirely on the account given by Herodotus, who described the event approximately 50 years after it took place. Xerxes' campaign was motivated partly by the desire to avenge the Greeks' defeat of the Persians at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, and partly by ambition for imperial expansion. Even before the Battle of Thermopylae, Xerxes had already won over to his cause large parts of Greece (Thessaly, Argos, and most of central Greece) through both a diplomatic initiative and the threat of force. The Greeks, under the leadership of Sparta, abandoned the Thessalian frontier and made a stand instead at the pass of Thermopylae (meaning "hot gates", a reference to the hot sulphur springs in the vicinity). With the sea on one side and high cliffs on the other, the pass was a strategic defence position between northern and southern Greece. To protect the Greek allies from a possible Persian naval attack, the Greek fleet positioned itself off Artemision, commanding the straits between the island of Sciathos and the mainland. The figures given by Herodotus for the strength of the Persian forces are quite impossible: for example, he states that 20,000 Libyan charioteers were but one component of a total force of over 5 million men. Nevertheless, it is clear that the Persian force (which included a contingent of subject peoples such as Libyans as well as Greeks) greatly outnumbered the Greeks. According to Herodotus, the Greeks numbered no more than 5,200. The Spartans and their allies claimed to be unable to provide further men during the Carneia (an annual festival) and the festivities that accompanied the Olympian Games: modern writers have suggested that they may also have been unwilling, or that they did not sufficiently understand the Persian threat. The battle took place over three days. Initial attacks upon the Greek position by Medes and Cissians in the Persian force were easily repulsed. Xerxes then replaced them with his Immortals (an elite force) under the command of Hydarnes. Their greater numbers were, however, of no advantage in the confined space of the pass and their shorter spears made them unable to engage the Greeks at close quarters. This stalemate was broken only when, on the second day, a Greek deserter, Ephialtes, advised Xerxes that, by following a mountain path, the Persians could outflank the Greek force. The Immortals, numbering perhaps as many as 10,000, set out at night under the command of Hydarnes. On their way, they encountered a group of 1,000 Phocians whom Leonidas had sent out to guard the path. Imagining that they were the sole object of the Persian advance, the Phocians retreated to high ground, prepared to die. The Persians passed by. When Leonidas and the main force heard the news of the Persian forces' approach, opinion as to the best course of action was apparently divided. Some of the allies counselled retreat; some simply decamped. Others, however, including Leonidas and the Spartans, refused to move. Herodotus records the story that Leonidas dismissed any allies who were unwilling to remain, keeping a force of only 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, and 400 Thebans. Leonidas was subsequently killed in fighting in the pass. After the arrival of the Immortals, the remaining Greeks retreated to a small hillock, where they formed a circle and were massacred by the Persians. The reason why Leonidas made his final stand remains unknown. It is possible that he did so for strategic purposes; perhaps, for example, to hold the Persian forces back for long enough to allow the other Greeks to retreat. It would have been in keeping with the Spartan military ethos, however, for Leonidas to have acted out of a desire for glory. That is the opinion of Herodotus: an oracle, he records, foretold that either Sparta or one of her kings would perish; by his death, Leonidas saved his city. The Persians went on to take Athens but, later in 480 BC, the Greek navy defeated them at the Battle of Salamis, halting Xerxes' advance on Greece and putting an end to his imperial ambitions. Hi everybody, The outcome of the game of Marathon that ended last Friday upon 55 turns full of courage and intrigue is reflected in the Galaxy Explorer pages now (http://explorer.sourceforge.net). This is merely a preliminary write-up, your input is solicited herewith to add juicy flesh of details to the bare bones of stats. The Hall of Fame update resulted in the race of WLs (the winner of Marathon) securing their 5th place among the immortal. The race of Arachnoids (3rd in Marathon) stepped over the hapless SpamPeople to take place 11. Last but not least, a new vibrant race of Eniac (2nd in Marathon) entered the Hall of Fame at place 20. Cheers to the winners and all those who fought! This is not the end of the story. A new game will be announced soon... Best regards. Alexander |

Hi, For your information, I enclose a message that has been sent of late to the players who've signed up for Marathon. There's still a slot free there - or more if you care. So, join in! Best regards. Alexander [BEGIN] Hi everybody, The prolonged waiting is over: the initial reports of the game of Marathon will be sent around this Thursday, December 11, 2003. The game server will run under ga...@ne... , which address will be enabled as soon as the initial reports hit your mailboxes. Please refrain from writing messages to this address before that moment, for they will simply be gobbled up by the system. The game will have a short startup period (5 turns a week, Mo-Fr) in the first week (December 15-19). It'll then switch to 3 turns a week (Mo, Wed, Fri) until turn 23, inclusive. Starting with turn 24, turns will be run on Tuesdays and Fridays 'till the end of time. I plan to make the game completely closed. The only information available to you will be the size of the field, and that only for the sake of viewing. The number of races, planets, etc. will have to be figured out by you in the process of exploring the galaxy. Usual highlander rules will apply, and the only extension switched on will be the extended turn report format. Global messages will be turned on upon turn 5. Partial bombing will be allowed with some reasonable conversion percentages. Please note that I will be receiving Judge reports to keep an eye on the developments. We won't have a Xmas pause unless 2/3 of the players vote for it. All comments and suggestions are welcome under su...@fo... . Best regards. Alexander P.S. For those of you who are new to this wonderful game, more information on it can be found at http://explorer.sourceforge.net and links therefrom. In particular, the newest GalaxyChart can be downloaded at http://sourceforge.net/projects/explorer , while the Planet Production Calculator and Galaxy HQ frontend (for Linux and Windows), as well as many useful tips, can be found at http://home.foni.net/~supalov/explorer . And of course, you can always write me up with your questions, for I won't be playing in this game and will thus be able to give absolutely untainted and impartial advice. [END] |

A brief historical note for the most curious of us: Marathon, Battle of (September 490 BC), in the Greco-Persian Wars, decisive battle fought on the Marathon plain of northeastern Attica in which the Athenians, in a single afternoon, repulsed the first Persian invasion of Greece. Command of the hastily assembled Athenian army was vested in 10 generals, each of whom was to hold operational command for one day. The generals were evenly divided on whether to await the Persians or to attack them, and the tie was broken by a civil official, Callimachus, who decided in favour of an attack. Four of the generals then ceded their commands to the Athenian general Miltiades, thus effectively making him commander in chief. The Greeks could not hope to face the Persians' cavalry contingent on the open plain, but before dawn one day the Greeks learned that the cavalry were temporarily absent from the Persian camp, whereupon Miltiades ordered a general attack upon the Persian infantry. In the ensuing battle, Miltiades led his contingent of 10,000 Athenians and 1,000 Plataeans to victory over the Persian force of 15,000 by reinforcing his battle line's flanks and thus decoying the Persians' best troops into pushing back his centre, where they were surrounded by the inward- wheeling Greek wings. On being almost enveloped, the Persian troops broke into flight. By the time the routed Persians reached their ships, they had lost 6,400 men; the Greeks lost 192 men, including Callimachus. The battle proved the superiority of the Greek long spear, sword, and armour over the Persians' weapons. According to legend, an Athenian messenger was sent from Marathon to Athens, a distance of about 25 miles (40 km), and there he announced the Persian defeat before dying of exhaustion. This tale became the basis for the modern marathon race. Herodotus, however, relates that a trained runner, Pheidippides (also spelled Phidippides, or Philippides), was sent from Athens to Sparta before the battle in order to request assistance from the Spartans; he is said to have covered about 150 miles (240 km) in about two days. Hi everybody, I've just updated the main Galaxy Explorer site with the results of the recently ended fierce team game Crescent. High praises to the team Triumvirate that exterminated the respected opposition in just 22 turns! A new solo game is going to be announced once the Judges figure out the details between themselves. Stay tuned. Best regards. Alexander |

Hi everybody, In response to multiple queries, and feeling terribly sorry for the delay, I've just published the results of the games of Pulsar and Orion at the main Galaxy Explorer page (http://explorer.sourceforge.net). Pulsar results have lead to a historical change at the top part of the Hall of Fame. Orion did not make it there due to a specific precondition imposed by the Judge. Detailed game write-ups will be added later. Best regards. Alexander P.S. By the way, there is a growing certainty among the Judges that those willing to are going be offered another chance of awaking to the light of merciless stars rather sooner than later. Stay tuned. |
