In my case, I'm seeing the behavior with 5.6.1.  

It's been a while since I tracked it down, but I seem to remember that it
ran into trouble in IO::Pty::make_slave_controlling_terminal.

  Did it change when you went to 5.8.0 then?  You might report it to p5p,
although at this point I don't think we have the behavior isolated down to
the root of what's causing it.  (Ideally someone with a lot of time would
trace through the code in Expect.pm to find out where it happens, and build
a minimal test case requiring no additional modules.)
