$object -> exp_internal(1) does not have the same effect as
$Expect::Exp_Internal = 1 (the patterns are not printed out in the former).

In _multi_expect we have 
      # What are we expecting? What do you expect? :-)
      if ($Expect::Exp_Internal) {
with no test of ${*$self}{exp_Exp_Internal}

Yeah, the debug code is a mess, thanks for telling.  I'll do some cleanup
in the next release (patches always welcome).
