Indeed, editing build.bat line 25 and changing -Xmx to 1300m does
allow the build to complete.

Could you recommend a clean way to pass Xmx properties to the startup
script, either when invoking build.bat or via a local build properties
file?

Or is is now the case that eXist-db requires 64 bit machines that can
dedicate 2 GB of RAM to eXist?
