eXist: I've been working on a project at the University of Chicago that involves querying XML data from a Web site developed using PHP. The connection between the PHP 5.1 page and the eXist XML server is SOAP. Relatively complex queries work and are fast (<100 ml). My problem is if I add and 'order by' clause to any query I get and empty response back. If I remove the the 'order by' clause, the query returns the correct results (unsorted). If I perform the same query with the 'order by' clause using the eXist Admin Client, the sorted results are returned. The query execution time is relatively long (sometimes 3000 ml). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Best Regards, =A0 Charles Crable =A0 =A0 |

Do you have the latest CVS version of eXist? Have you tried setting up range indexes for your queries? Thanks Adam. I GOT AROUND the problem by switching to an RPC interface between PHP and eXist. As I said before the SOAP queries work EXCEPT for ones with 'order by' clauses. The same queries, including ones with 'order by' clauses, work with RPC interface. The RPC interface is far from perfect. I am only doing search queries, so the RPC interface I found on Source Forge worked (I had to fix some bugs in RPC class code). Some methods don't seem to work. Is there a clean interface between PHP and eXist out there somewhere? When I last has exist working some months back (currently I'm experiencing configuration problems with the latest exist.war on tomcat) .. I had good results with this abstraction ..... PHP5 <--> montag <--> exist both montag and exist running on tomcat5. http://montag.sourceforge.net Montag site seems a bit quiet, but it works nicely. And a goal is for the API to be database independent. Montag is listed on the wiki.exist-db.org. Exist and Montag both run as tomcat5 webapps. In fact, I also have PHP5 running nicely in CGI mode on Tomcat5, using phpservlet, but that is another story. I can send you working examples of PHP5 <--> montag <--> exist if you hit problems. DL |

Which is probably why nobody here thought it was their task to do it for you. This is a user/developer support, exchange and discussion list, not a term-papers repository. If you browse the archives of this list you will find more than enough about the strengths and (past or current) weaknesses of eXist to get you started, and a good idea of what sort of data it is currently being used to handle. Then study the materials on Ron Bourret's site http://www.rpbourret.com/ to get the bigger picture and an idea of what a meaningful comparison of native XML dbs needs to cover. You will also there find links to the dbXML site and to SoftwareAG for Tamino, both of which will provide you with material for feature comparisons. Performance comparisons you won't be able to do, unless your site has a Tamino license or you have access to a lot of cash to purchase one... Michael Beddow |
