Dear List, This question is preparatory to a more substantive one. I have recently installed exist 6.0.1 on my local computer, having leapfrogged from 4.7.1 to 6. On the dashboard, I am used to seeing the collections manager but this seems to be missing. Has this been retired? Do I need to install it manually? All best, HL |

Hello all, Updating an app to make it compatible with version 5+. Encountering error on importing: http://exist-db.org/xquery/httpclient Am guessing that this has to do with this shift <https://gitlab.gwdg.de/SADE/SADE/-/issues/87> to expath httpc ( http://expath.org/ns/http-client). Can anyone point to a worked solution I can imitate? Many thanks, HL |

Dear list, next week I will be upgrading eXist 5.3.0 to 6.0.1 on two servers (because of the log4j versions). I'd like to ask two questions beforehand: - if I do this via the suggested method of copying the "/data" directory from my 5.3.0 to the newly installed 6.0.1 version, will all of the users and groups that I have created in the 5.3.0 instance be copied over as well, or will I need to recreate them in the 6.0.1 instance? (I suspect they will be copied over, but I thought it best to ask.) - regarding the issue with WebDAV and connecting eXist 6 to oXygen: I have tried this morning on my local computer (Mac OsX 12.4) to install 6.0.1 and to edit documents from apps in that installation with oXygen (version 20), and I experienced no issues. Does this mean there will also be no problems editing files on the eXist 6.0.1 on an ubuntu server? Thanks very much for your help, Vincent |

Dear List: When I try to package or directly upload files to a collection, I receive numerous errors like: [xdb:store] Storing P00001\P00001-0403.xml ... > [xdb:store] Storing P00002.xml ... > [xdb:store] XMLDB exception caught: Failed to invoke method > uploadCompressed in class org.exist.xmlrpc.RpcConnection: Expected 654027 > bytes of uncompressed data, but actually 0 > [xdb:store] Storing P00002\P00002-0404.xml ... P00002.xml appears to be a fully valid XML file on my end. I thought a missing xml declaration might be the cause, but apparently not. Suggestions? Thx HL |

The problem described here sounds suspiciously like this known bug<https://github.com/eXist-db/dashboard/issues/129> in the Dashboard. I’d try one of the two workarounds<https://github.com/eXist-db/dashboard/issues/129#issuecomment-1131680049> found by Joe Wicentowski. xmldb:is-admin-user has been replaced with sm:is-dba. Just do a search and replace. The other error is likely triggered by an invalid XML file. Hi, Did you save an old password in the browser, is that used? I’d first clean the browser cache Regards Dannes > On 20 Jul 2022, at 20:10, Hayim Lapin <hl...@um...> wrote: > > > My apologies for being such a pesky poster. > > Now installing 6.0.1 on a windows 10 machine. My apologies for being such a pesky poster. Now installing 6.0.1 on a windows 10 machine. Initial admin login does not work on dashboard. Can call java admin client and password works there and in monex, but not, I can't access the packagemanager etc from the dashboard. Suggestions? Many thanks, HL |

Hmm - no new activity - that's strange. But starting up the existdb server "manually" using sudo -u existdb /home/ec2-user/exist-6.0.1/bin/startup.sh works? What's the output of systemctl status existdb after starting the service using sudo systemctl start existdb? I'll try to set up a similar stack (AWS/RedHat) myself for testing, but this will take some time. Hello and thanks for the answer! ExecStart is correct (at least in the command line it starts exist) $EXIST_HOME/logs/exist.log registers no new activity on sudo systemctl start existdb or sudo systemctl restart existdb thx! I guess they were counting the navigation to $EXIST_HOME. So many the documentation would be more correct if it said: /You do so by navigating to your $EXIST_HOME folder and typing the following two commands:// //cd $EXIST_HOME// //sudo chown -R existdb:existdb / On 7/19/22 12:42 PM, Hayim Lapin wrote: > As a footnote: the documentation reads: > > You do so by navigating to your |$EXIST_HOME| folder and typing > the following two commands: > sudo chown -R existdb:existdb . > > But isn't there only one command here? > > On Tue, Jul 19, 2022 at 1:34 PM Hayim Lapin <hl...@um...> wrote: > > Dear list, > I have successfully created an aws instance running the default > linux os running on port 8899. > I have also followed the directions here > <https://exist-db.org/exist/apps/doc/advanced-installation#service> for > running existdb as a service, apparently to no effect. Hayim, at first sight, your existdb.service file looks fine. I would first start checking the ExecStart path. If the path is valid, i would recommend to check the logs, especially $EXIST_HOME/logs/exist.log. Errors during startup should show up there. You may also try to run the startup.sh script manually as existdb user: sudo -u existdb /home/ec2-user/exist-6.0.1/bin/startup.sh To stop the exist server started this way, just hit CTRL+C. Regarding sudo chown -R existdb:existdb . You're right, it's only one command. The documentation is slightly outdated in that regard. Initially, it contained two separate commands to set the user and the group separately. The single command above combines both steps. As a footnote: the documentation reads: > You do so by navigating to your $EXIST_HOME folder and typing the > following two commands: > sudo chown -R existdb:existdb . But isn't there only one command here? Dear list, I have successfully created an aws instance running the default linux os running on port 8899. I have also followed the directions here <https://exist-db.org/exist/apps/doc/advanced-installation#service> for running existdb as a service, apparently to no effect. My existed.service file below. Any hints about what I may be doing wrong? Many thanks, HL [Unit] Description=eXist-db Server Documentation=https://exist-db.org/exist/apps/doc/ After=syslog.target [Service] Type=simple User=existdb Group=existdb ExecStart=/home/ec2-user/exist-6.0.1/bin/startup.sh [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target Any suggestions about what I might be doing wrong? |

Thanks to all of you who answered (mostly off list) One issue was not dumping the data on an old version of exist. Now I seem to have some sort of port conflict that I can't solve... But progress. Hayim, > java.io.IOException: Database is read-only This is bad. Really bad. I bet this is related to SELinux which is enabled by default on RedHat Linux. SELinux is a "security enhancement" mechanism that does not play well with Java applications. You may want to change file /etc/selinux/config, set "SELINUX=permissive" and reboot. This will allow certain low-level Java/eXist-db operations that were blocked by the default SELinux policy. Have a chat with a buddy sysadmin about the implications of doing this before following advice from some random guy on the Internet :) Or google "selinux java" for starters. IMHO SELinux is security theater, and I tend to disable it on RedHat systems that run Java applications. Because there is no gain and lots of losses (debugging why things don't work). Olaf |

Thanks for this! There should be no disk space issues and (possibly because I am an inexperience system administrator) the root user is running the installation. Is it specifically the data directory that is at issue in "connecting with database"? That seems to be a place to start! Hayim Lapin Professor of History Robert H.
