No I think we'll keep on supporting it (in a way?), certainly as long there is help from the community to have it tested/updated; you showed us that this is the case; For some having the possibility to add a WAR file to exist-db adds flexibility. There are cases where I like to deploy a small war file, but I do not want to install yet-another-server. With a small configuration change it is actually possible to have it working in eXistdb.... Adam: yeah I understand the concern about memory usage etal (I showed my concerns quite often), so just like for the WAR file distribution, we need to warn users for the risks and instruct how to do things........ cheers Dannes |

> I get the impression that there's a strong intent that eXist-DB will not continue to support war deployment. As Dannes and others said previously, we'll continue to support the war deployment option if there is interest in it. Obviously there is. The changes Dannes was investigating would allow other war packages to be deployed into eXist-db's jetty, a possibility which has been requested by some people. This feature would complement the other option of installing eXist-db as a war. However, there are some risks if you deploy a number of wars into the same container and we had some negative experiences with this in the past. This is the reason why we stopped providing a war for download. But for sure this is not an issue for experienced users. I think the potential issues - memory being shared between web apps - have to be made clear and should be properly documented. Wolfgang |

I get the impression that there's a strong intent that eXist-DB will not continue to support war deployment. We have been using eXist-DB successfully in a tomcat war deployment since 2004 and are committed to using eXist going forward; however, if war deployment is to be discontinued then we need to understand that so that we can begin planning on using the remaining standalone deployment incorporating jetty. We have not had any problem with other webapps eating all the RAM and corrupting the eXist-DB. We have been happy with the flexibility afforded by the war deployment option and it's independence from the particular container. I have been trying to help with the war deployment side of things in a small way but if there is active intent to discontinue this mode of deployment then perhaps that effort would be better applied in other areas. Can I ask - why do we want to deploy WAR files? We had similar problems with getting the expath-crypto module to run. We had to modify the conf.xml to put in the correct module element and we had to copy the crypto jar file to the $EXIST_HOME/lib/extensions. After we made both those changes it worked. - Dan .... By the way you can get the latest 0.2.2 version of the EXPATH crypto module here: http://code.google.com/p/existdb-contrib/downloads/list And then just use the "Upload" on the package installer. On the trunk you will need to change the conf.xml from: <module uri="http://kuberam.ro/ns/x-crypt" class="ro.kuberam.xcrypt.XcryptModule" /> to be <module uri="http://expath.org/ns/crypto" class="org.expath.exist.crypto.ExistExpathCryptoModule" /> Note that we could not get the module to work when the jar file was in the new package location here /webapp/WEB-INF/expathrepo/expath-crypto-0.2.2/expath-crypto So Claudius suggested that we manually copy the jar file into lib/extensions and that worked. I tested the module when I uploaded the .xar to the public repo and I could use it in my queries. It won't show up in the function documentation nor in eXide, because both will look at the static XQuery context only, whereas the expath-crypto classes are requested dynamically from the expath repository, which is a different component. Hi Wolfgang, I have been trying to install the expath-crypto.xar package via the new dashboard, but after installing (and even after restarting the db), the module is not available to my queries. What do I mean? I mean that: I don't see the module in the function documentation (after regenerating) - I don't see anything under namespace http://expath.org/ns/crypto. Also, when I import the namespace into an eXide document, eXide's function completion for crypto:___ isn't working. Do you know if these changes affected the installation of modules like crypto and functx? I recall that the crypto app worked for me when I tested it briefly a few weeks ago. Thanks, Joe |

Hi Wolfgang, Thanks so much for your help. After updating and rebuilding (I also wiped the autodeploy directory before rebuilding), I'm now able to start up and go to the Dashboard, which is working great. However, I do still get this error message on startup, indicating that eXist-db is unable to delete the temporary directories with the unpacked .xar files' contents: 06 Nov 2012 15:39:08,986 [main] INFO (JettyStart.java [run]:144) - [log4j.configuration : file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/wicentowskijc/oxygensvn/exist-trunk/log4j.xml] Error deleting dir: C:\Documents and Settings\wicentowskijc\oxygensvn\exist-trunk\webapp\WEB-INF\expathrepo\.expath-pkg\install-20121106-8668179570188667506.d Loading mime table from file C:\Documents and Settings\wicentowskijc\oxygensvn\exist-trunk\mime-types.xml Error deleting dir: C:\Documents and Settings\wicentowskijc\oxygensvn\exist-trunk\webapp\WEB-INF\expathrepo\.expath-pkg\install-20121106-6581450568633886055.d Error deleting dir: C:\Documents and Settings\wicentowskijc\oxygensvn\exist-trunk\webapp\WEB-INF\expathrepo\.expath-pkg\install-20121106-5270663825807830779.d I also get a similar but much longer error with an NPE when I try to delete the EXPath crypto package after installing it [1]. Unexpectedly, these error messages are only in the console, not in exist.log. I'm starting eXist-db via bin/startup.bat on Win XP - all using the same user account. I can provide any more info that you need and can test fixes. Thanks, Joe p.s. > I'm currently working to improve the dashboard so it will detect when new versions are available. This should make above process obsolete. Ok, so the latest version of the dashboard will indicate in the package manager if a newer version is available for a package. It is also possible to update the dashboard itself, though you may need to do a page reload afterwards. Wolfgang |

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Wolfgang Meier <wol...@ex...> Date: Tue, Nov 6, 2012 at 10:34 AM Subject: [Exist-open] Location of apps changed To: eXist open <exi...@li...> Hi guys, as you may have noticed, a major cleanup has happened in trunk during the past days. The web app directory is nearly empty now. What used to be in webapp is now provided by apps which can be deployed on demand via the package manager in the dashboard. Accessing http://localhost:8080/exist/will consequently redirect you to the dashboard. The last step today was to move installed apps from the /db collection into /db/apps. Consequently, /exist/apps/ now maps to /db/apps and not /db. This change will likely break your existing installation, but it was necessary to avoid future chaos. If you want to update your working copy of eXist-db trunk, you have the following options: Option 1) Uninstall any app you deployed into your eXist-db instance before updating, then reinstall them after the update. ** Make sure you remove all .xar from your $EXIST_HOME/autodeploy directory. The build scripts will download new versions once you build ** Option 2) Edit conf.xml.tmpl and change the root option in <repository root="/db/apps"/> back to "/db". Edit webapp/WEB-INF/controller-config.xml and change the mapping for /apps to point to /db again: <root pattern="/apps" path="xmldb:exist:///db"/> This will restore the old setup, i.e. apps are expected to reside in /db. Hi Joe, > I have just updated to trunk (2.1dev rev. 17511) no local modifications, clean data & expathrepo directories) and built on WinXP. I am getting the following errors about files not being deletable [1], and the dashboard reports that there is an error when retrieving the package list [2]. I imagine these might be caused by work that is clearly underway - so let me know if these are already known issues. I just wanted to report them. You are using an old version of the dashboard. As a temporary workaround, please update as follows: * Remove the eXide and dashboard apps (no surprise: the last step will break the dashboard) * Shutdown eXist * Clear the autodeploy directory * Call build.sh once - this will download new versions of the default apps * Relaunch I'm currently working to improve the dashboard so it will detect when new versions are available. This should make above process obsolete. Wolfgang |

Hi, I made some preparations for XSD1.1 support in trunk ... http://sourceforge.net/p/exist/code/17484/ FYI D, -- Dannes Wessels eXist-db Open Source Native XML Database e: da...@ex... w: http://www.exist-db.org t: #existdb |

Hello, I have been looking at trunk rev 17443 and have found what seems an oddity with the way that UMASK is being applied. I have a build with Permission.DEFAULT_UMASK = 007 rather than 022 so that users and group members would have full Collection and Resource permissions and others would have no permissions. The Resource permissions that result are 0657 rather than 0660 which I expected. I think that in places such as PermissionFactory.getDefaultResourcePermission and PermissionFactory.getDefaultCollectionPermission the code should be like: perms & ~ umask rather than perms - umask The latter works sometimes but fails in other cases, for example when 0666 - 0007 == 0657 but 0666 & ~ 0007 == 0660 always works in accordance with my understanding of umask. I'll implement xquery version (without wrapping). On Fri, Oct 19, 2012 at 7:02 PM, Dan McCreary <dan...@gm...>wrote: > There is also a version of format-number() in XSLT.
