Hello Joern,

I think that the github repository for this app should be under EXPath and not eXist-db.  

The control panels should be under the eXist-db github repository.  

I can setup a wiki at my site where we can explore ideas.

I am attaching my initial mockups from while at XML Prague 2014.

i appreciate efforts to improve the dashboard. It was just a first quick
sketch back then and it's about time to think of version 2. As it's a
central part of the eXist user interface we should however design it
sensibly and gather as much input as possible.

So first thing would be about sharing the ideas and mockups and ideally
allow comments to certain elements online (does anyone know a tool allowing
that?). Same applies to the actual code - why not setup it as a repo on the
eXistdb github (i'll ask Wolfgang about that) so more interested people can
participate.

My first questions about your sketch:
am i getting you right that you'd like to make a distinction between our
current plugins (which handle administrative things within eXist) and the
actual xar applications and put them in a kind of toolbar? If so, i agree
in general with the idea - however i'm not sure if i favour a toolbar for
that - probably i can come up with some alternative so let me think about
it.

We should also probably define some requirements:
- defnitely should be responsive (+1 for your effort to do so)
- should allow for themes. It's a matter of taste if you like shades or
prefer a flat look. Same applies to backgrounds. So a design should use
sensible CSS classes from ground up and favor a simple and clean markup

I was aware of teian and its annotation possibilities. It is something, 
I would really like to push through in the second phase.
I am more interested in a full-scale XML editor with navigation 
possibilities. So I will test your suggestions and come back to you soon.

From our discussion at the eXist pre-conference session, I am working on a new dashboard that should be general for all EXPath implementations.

The differences between implementations would be in the control panels.  I am planning on moving the control panels out of the plugins.  I am planning on placing the control panels in /db/system/controls for eXist.  The control panels will have a smaller icon and the icons will be on the top bar.  When a control panel icon is selected, then the control panel then slides down underneath the top bar.  An example of this can be seen by selecting the first icon on the top bar and see the drop-down to show the control panels.

The squares below are for the launch of each app.  I have made the page mobile responsive.  It is also made using the Polymer web components and not bootstrap.

(Actually one of the reasons we wrote our own from scratch). You might want
to checkout these guys: http://www.fontoxml.com/

Although both of these are commercial products.

I am currently working on the next version of our WYSIWYG (more
appropriately WYSIOO) editor for our product easyDITA which runs on eXist (
http://easydita.com). Having written one editor from scratch already, and
starting on writing a second version from scratch, I can tell you it's a
huge undertaking with lots of gotchas.

It's a possibility that we might release this next version in some way as a
community edition which can be used for free for some types of
institutions. If you want to chat about it more feel free to message me.

Yes of course, Leif's efforts are much appreciated. I was not casting
any doubt on Leif. Rather I was expressing my frustration that I have
offered to help and not been taken up on it, yet the problem still
persists.

Is the new host Leif is looking at also in Sweeden? If so I do not
think this is a good solution, as I think you mentioned the problems
yesterday/today were with Sweedish connectivity.

Of course we're absolutely annoyed by those network issues, in particular because they seem to happen only when we’re busy. If it could be done quickly, we would have created a mirror already. It would probably cost me a day though and I rather have to spend my time on development than administering servers.

I have offered a server that I have several times but have had not
response from you guys! Recently the eXist website has been down quite
a lot, and this is really not acceptable for me.

It's not the server but the Swedish internet again. Depending on where you
come from, you'll get through or not. We checked from different German
network providers. Some work, some not.

Just as a point of curiosity, it seems odd to me that an "too many open
files" error would be encountered. Even on the default settings for linux
(1000 file handles) it takes quite a bit of load to get to this problem,
unless there is a file handles leak.

It might be worth checking to make sure the instance of eXist on
exist-db.org is not leaking file handles....

Dear all, it is up again.
Not same reason, but on the other hand I don't know since the data
center ticket server refuses to show their answer to my request due to
"too many open files" ... :( so I assume a lot of requests were issued...

I have at least started to prepare for a redundant solution and will
install another server in another data center in the first week of February.

Mostly the problems arise, because it is impossible, to convert a URI to 
a string, and then to a URI back again without risking corruption. 
Repeat: this will not work reliably, unless the string represents a 
fully qualified URI. The code of class XmldbURI shows some confusion 
about that. In the beginning it says, it is only about paths, but then 
it provides methods to extract a scheme etc. From time to time, this 
will fail.

Please read attached patch: It may be a starting point to let eXist-db 
gracefully handle most of the characters, that are problematic in URIs. 
The comments should be helpful, if a little casual in tone.

The patch tries to be unobtrusive and respect the expectations of users 
of the xmldb functions. It is tested with curl and davfs. The names look 
nice too in dashboard-browser, eXide and the old admin panel.

Caveats: Some interoperabilty issues remain, eg. some parts of eXist 
want double-encoded special chars and umlauts etc. You should not give 
in into this. Also, it is assumed, that server operating systems have 
utf-8 clean filesystems for storing binaries. Possibly others…

It is a cleaner design. You have an interface for those people that
wish to implement their own triggers where they need to implement all
methods. And you have an identity transform in the form of
IdentitySaxDocumentTrigger (which implements SaxDocumentTrigger) for
those people that just wish to override one or two methods.

I do not understand how you can remove those methods and not loose
functionality? For example how would I know if I am in the validation
or storage phase? Also how can I chain handlers without them?

DocumentTrigger should not extend the ContentHandler and
LexicalHandler interfaces, instead SaxDocumentTrigger should extend
those.
SaxDocumentTrigger should be changed to an interface, with the current
abstractions from FilteringTrigger placed into a class called
IdentitySaxDocumentTrigger which implements SaxDocumentTrigger.

The following methods should also be moved from DocumentTrigger to
SaxDocumentTrigger-

public boolean isValidating();
public void setValidating(boolean validating);
public void setOutputHandler(ContentHandler handler);
public void setLexicalOutputHandler(LexicalHandler handler);

For those who are interested we have been testing this successfully this
week. There are somethings that other developers should know if they are
going to use the functionality:


   1. The SAX parser makes two passes over the stream, one with
   isValidating() set to true, and the second with isValidating() set to
   false. On the second pass you should not be throwing any exceptions, or
   allowing NPE's because this is when the stream is being stored.
   2. The second pass is the only one which can actually modify the SAX
   stream, if you modify the stream in the first pass, but not the second, you
   will not see your changes in the resulting stored file.
   3. Make sure you always call the super method in your SAX methods to
   ensure that you do not unintentionally omit information from the stream.


Using this process we have been able to significantly increase the
efficiency of our document processing on storage. More people testing would
be greatly appreciated.
