I am trying to apply stopwords when loading my database, but cannot seem to make it work (or simply don't understand the implications)

I am using eXist-0.9.1.

My stopword file contains the following (each term on a separate line):
a
about
above
across
necessary
young
younger
youngest

The stopword file resides in directory eXist-0.9.1 (EXIST_HOME).

My conf.xml file contains the line:
<stopwords file="stopword"/>

After loading my database (using the command line client in local mode),
I enter:   find //* &='necessary'

The system responds with:   found 1937 hits.  Since "necessary" was in my
stopwords list, I expected 0 results.  Why the hits??  Is the system actually
scanning the documents which have been indexed as opposed to simply
looking in the index for the term?
