Getting started with EXE and Ustad Mobile on Ubuntu

  • Download the .deb package, EXEMobile2.jar and EXEMobile2.jad from the link below for your version of Ubuntu (be careful to check if you're using 32bit Ubuntu or 64bit Ubuntu).

  • Double click to install the package with the package manager. (If when you double click it you only see the home screen of the Ubuntu software manager click the progress button the top)

  • Find eXe in your program menu and click to start it.

  • From the menu on the left hand side you see a menu of the diff

  • The list on the left has a list of templated interaction mechanisms. For more information see the Reference. For this example - we'll add a sort exercise. From the list on the left scroll down and click on Sort Items.

Fill in the instructions - say sort the units from lowest to highest. In Correctly Sorted Overlay put in what should appear when the student sorts the items correctly - e.g. Correct :) . In Wrongly Sorted Overlay enter what will show when it's incorrect - e.g. Please try again!!!

Click on Add another Item to be Sorted to get sortable item boxes and put what you want in the boxes (e.g. here cm, m, and km)

Click the Green Check Box. Et voila! Try it- you can drag and drop the items into order.

You can save the package from the (inner) file - this will save it as EXE's format - .elp. Now you can export it. To export it to a folder that can be opened with any web browser just click File -> Export -> Website -> Self Contained Folder.

Export for Mobile

To export it for a mobile phone click File -> Export -> XML -> EXE XML Export. Type a folder name. Inside that folder you'll find a folder called nokia. You can rename this folder as you like and copy it to an SD card. Also copy EXEMobile2.jar and EXEMobile2.jad - download from:

Put the memory card in a Nokia Series 40 basic feature phone (Like the Nokia 112 available for around $45 USD). Open up the apps menu, then the memory card and you'll find an App called Ustad Mobile . Answer Always when asked to allow permissions. You'll see a list of the folders with compatible learning content. Just open it up - and presto - the the interactive learning you created is available on the phone!

Use the up/down key to hilight the one you want to move. Push the main button to select the item to move, it'll be highlighted red. Then move it up and down. Push the main button again to 'drop' it in place. When done go down to the check button.
