The EVMS team is announcing the 2.5.5 release of the Enterprise Volume Management System. This is the fifth maintenance release in the EVMS 2.5.x series, and is primarily intended to fix some recent bug-reports, as well as to update to the most recent kernel and Device-Mapper releases. In addition, three new plugins have been added in this release. The source code package and sample init-ramdisk image for 2.5.5 are now available for download at the project web site: http://evms.sourceforge.net/ EVMS 2.5.5 is supported on recent 2.6 and 2.4.22 through 2.4.32 kernels. Please see the INSTALL and README files in the 2.5.5 package for installation instructions and other notes. I mean it. Really. There are important notes about the new changes that you need to read if you're going to use them. If you have any questions, find any bugs, or simply want to report success stories, please send email to the EVMS mailing list (evm...@li...) or visit the EVMS IRC channel (irc.freenode.net, #evms). -- Kevin Corry kev...@us... http://www.ibm.com/linux/ http://evms.sourceforge.net/ EVMS Changelog ============== 2.5.5 (2/24/2006) - New plugins - OCFS2 FSIM, contributed by Robert Whitehead from Novell. - FAT FSIM, contribued by Anton D. Kachalov from ALT Linux Ltd. - Heartbeat2 Cluster Manager, contributed by Changju Gao from Novell. - Bug fixes - Clean up compile warnings from gcc4. - Engine - Perform remote rediscovery after filesystem changes have been made so other cluster nodes will pick up the volume changes. - Disk Plugin - Try to get disk geometry from the DOS MBR before asking the kernel. - MD Plugin - Allow creating degraded RAID-1 and RAID-5 regions. - Correct size checks when assembling list of available objects to add to an existing raid1 using the version-1 superblock. - Provide an option for creating a version-1 superblock even if the running kernel does not support them. - evms_mpathd - When sending test-I/Os to a failed path, use the device's hard-sector-size instead of assuming 512 bytes for the request size. |

Greetings, EVMS is releasing a new sample init-ramdisk image for the 2.5.1 release. The init-ramdisk that was part of the 2.5.1 release forced some changes to the kernel command-line parameters for specifying the root volume. After some discussion on evms-devel this week, some changes were made that allows the kernel command-line parameters to remain the same as in all previous versions of the EVMS init-ramdisk. The only change necessary now for upgrading from a 2.4.1 or earlier version to this new version is to insure that your root filesystem has an /initrd directory. Thanks to Michel Bouissou and Syrius for helping refine the init-ramdisk's linuxrc script. This new init-ramdisk image is called evms-2.5.1.1-initrd-new.gz and is available for download from the EVMS website at http://evms.sourceforge.net. New md5 checksums are also available. The "old" init-ramdisk image is still available for the 2.5.1 release. However, since the "new" init-ramdisk can now use the same kernel parameters, only one init-ramdisk will be provided with future EVMS releases. No changes have been made to the 2.5.1 source package. If you have any questions or find any bugs with this new init-ramdisk image, please send email to the EVMS mailing list (evm...@li...) or visit the EVMS IRC channel (irc.freenode.net, #evms). -- Kevin Corry kev...@us... http://evms.sourceforge.net |

The EVMS team is announcing the next maintenance release of the Enterprise Volume Management System. Package 2.1.1 is now available for download at the project web site: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/evms This release is primarily intended to allow EVMS to work with the new Device-Mapper interface, but also contains other miscellaneous bug fixes. This version of EVMS will continue to work with existing 2.4 kernels compiled for EVMS 2.1.0 or 2.0.x, but users are encouraged to upgrade to the new Device-Mapper kernel driver if possible. Due to the new Device-Mapper release, the EVMS installation instructions have changed, especially with regard to patching and building your kernel. Please see the INSTALL file in the 2.1.1 package for information about installing and getting started with this EVMS release. In addition, support for using LILO with your kernel images on an EVMS volume now has limited support, based on the LILO-devmapper patches from Christophe Saout. Please see the INSTALL file for more details. EVMS 2.1.1 is supported on 2.4.21, 2.4.20, 2.4.19, and 2.6.0-test3 kernels. If you have any questions, find any bugs, or simply want to report success stories, please send email to the EVMS mailing list (evm...@li...) or visit the EVMS IRC channel (irc.freenode.net, #evms). -- Kevin Corry kev...@us... http://evms.sourceforge.net/ EVMS Changelog 2.1.1 (2003-08-15): - First maintenance release for 2.1.0. - Allow EVMS to run with version 3 or 4 of the Device-Mapper ioctl interface. - Update Snapshot activation sequence to work with DMv4. - Update BBR and Sparse kernel modules to use new dm-io and dm-daemon modules. - New APIs for mounting volumes to allow mounting and checking mounts on remote machines in a cluster. - Add -fno-strict-aliasing to compiler flags to prevent warnings when building with gcc 3.3. - Allow disk-manager to discover loop devices as disks. - Add instructions for patching LILO to work with EVMS volumes. - Based on Christophe Saout's lilo-devmapper patches. - Miscellaneous bug fixes. |

The EVMS team is announcing the next major release of the Enterprise Volume Management System. Package 2.1.0 is now available for download at the project web site: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/evms This release is for the new EVMS design, which is based on user-space volume discovery and communication with existing kernel drivers, such as MD/Software-RAID and Device-Mapper. Please see the INSTALL file in the 2.1.0 package for information about installing and getting started with the new EVMS. Since this new design is based on user-space discovery, there will no longer be boot-time volume activation. Please see the INSTALL file for information about how to activate your volumes using the EVMS user-interfaces and utilities. The INSTALL file also contains instructions for how users may easily "upgrade" an existing 2.4 kernel with Device-Mapper and EVMS 2.0.1 patches. Please see the README file in the 2.1.0 package for more detailed notes concerning this release and it's new features. EVMS 2.1.0 is supported on 2.4.21, 2.4.20, 2.4.19, and 2.5.73 kernels. If you have any questions, find any bugs, or simply want to report success stories, please send email to the EVMS mailing list (evm...@li...) or visit the EVMS IRC channel (irc.freenode.net, #evms). -- Kevin Corry kev...@us... http://evms.sourceforge.net/ EVMS ChangeLog 2.1.0 (2003-06-30): - Second major release of the new EVMS design - New Features - Clustering - RSCT plugin - allow EVMS to operate in RSCT clusters. - Snapshotting - Reset - reset a snapshot volume without needing to delete and recreate the snapshot. - Rollback - copy the saved contents of the snapshot back to the origin. - Software-RAID - RAID-1 reconfigure - RAID-1 resize - RAID-Linear resize - New Multipath plugin - UIs - When saving changes, add a "Details" button to display the list of items that have changes to save. - Macintosh Segment Manager - recognize Macintosh-native disk partitions. - Bug Fixes - Allow the engine to open if the lock-file cannot be created and the filesystem is read-only. - Fix problems with using O_DIRECT on 2.4 kernels. - Improvements to the HA plugin due to fixes in Linux-HA. - Better support for discovering disks on systems using devfs. - Remove evms_deactivate as a UI utility. This program should only be used for testing. |
