#3 Preload_1_0 bug fixes

Hi,

Here are a few minor bug fixes for dealing with
Postgres in preload_1_0-branch.

Mostly these deal with the way postgres is extremely
particular about the kind of data it accepts as input -
as discussed on the mailing list.
