What part number is the EPROM/EEPROM that you are using? Some cards require a faster speed than others. Even though a card might work under an OS, it might not present the ROM to the BIOS properly, and thus it will not be detected. For some debugging ideas, you could check out the Etherboot User's Guide, chapter on "Making and Etherboot EPROM or EEPROM. it is at: http://www.etherboot.org/doc/html/userman/x225.html There's also a nice tutorial on ROM burning at: http://www.hosef.org/wiki/EpromBurning that may be of some help. If you want to make sure that it's not the Etherboot code that is the problem, you could download a ROM image from the REALTEK site, and try burning that to your ROM: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx? series=16&Software=True#16DOS Look for "PXE ROM Code". They have some PXE ROM images there that might work (I haven't tried them). I suspect your problem is that the speed of the EPROM and the speed of the card don't match, assuming you're testing all three NICs (A/B/D) in the same machine, and only changing the NIC and EPROM. It could also be a PCI ID mismatch, but you seem to have ruled that out. I hope this information is of some help, and that we are able to help you debug this. I doubt the problem of the ROM not being detected is an Etherboot problem, but we will happy to help you figure out the cause, whatever it is. Have you tried this card (rtl8139 w/ etherboot ROM) in a few other machines (so we can see if it is some sort of BIOS issue)? Please let us know how things go, and the results of your debugging. I'm sure we can figure this out.
