Use the MAC number in the dhcpd setup file. You can see an example in=20 the dhcpd3(8) manual page (look for fixed-address and 'hardware=20 ethernet'). You have to make one entry per client host. This is best=20 done with a script. Peter |

I have never done any clustering, but from what I read it seems that much like there are many Linux desktop distros, there are now many cluster distros. so unless there is some reason none of them will work for you (doubtful)... for instance: "ParallelKnoppix is a Knoppix based CD that allows the user to set up a cluster of machines for parallel processing using LAM-MPI or MPICH. It takes less than 15 minutes to set the cluster up, and the slave nodes can PXE-boot." http://lcic.org/distros.html but back to your questions about Beowulf, this looks pretty good: http://frank.harvard.edu/~coldwell/diskless > > from where can I download the knoppix Terminal server distro, to implement > it? http://knoppix.com - it isn't a special knoppix, just an option on the standard one: app menu, knoppix, services, "start knoppix terminal server" and you will get a bunch of dialogs asking how you want it configured. I like to use the BT downloads - very fast and doesn't use any of the mirrors bandwidth: http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de ^Carl ps, be sure to hit "reply all" so a copy goes back to the list. (I would prefer reply just replies to the list, but that isn't how this list works.) |

hi, all. do you guys have tested the usability of undi.zpxe file for some NICs. i have problem while using it for loading boot image, actually it's a GRUB, in vmware(ver 5.5), it reports interrupt is re-entered. i add "CFLAGS+=3D-DPXELOADRE_KEEP_ALL" in file src/arch/i386/Config, but the prob= lem remains. in physical machine with RTL8139 NIC, after GRUB is loaded,PXENV_GET_CACHED_INFO UNDI call returns failure. i wonder wether some compatibility issue exists, and PXE specification seem= s to be badly written. thanks |

Hi Rene! I have already faced this problem. Well, here comes a little of my experience working with stateless machines: - I think you should try one of the cannonical cluster configurations, like Beowulf. - If you would like to try a thick-client, a kind of a diskless machine, it would be usefull start reading an old but interesting how-to provided by DNA Lounge: http://www.dnalounge.com/backstage/src/kiosk - Another way to work with diskless macbines is building thin-clients. Some interesting explanations could be found here: http://www.ltsp.org . This is a nice linux distro that allows you setup thin-clients in a simple way. Rene Harb wrote: > Hi everyone, I am Rene, from Chile. so... > I am doing a cluster without hard disk...and I got a problem with that. Which cluster? I have used the standard Knoppix Terminal Server which brings up other Knoppix systems on diskless workstations. It was very easy. I would sugest trying that, and then one of the CD Based Cluster Distros from http://lcic.org/distros.html ^Carl K |

Thought I would pass this on: I have a few of these: Intel eepro100 -- [0x8086,0x1229] They try to pxe boot (request goes out, server responds, gets ignored. repeat 4 times) When the box boots, I can hit ^S to get into a setup. I was going to follow the directions here: http://www.rom-o-matic.net/5.0.2/contrib/eepro100notes/flash-1.txt Using fboot.exe from http://support.intel.com/support/etherexpress/pro100/100pboot.htm> FBOOT.EXE is a part of 100pboot.exe "I found the intel program FBOOT.EXE that was made to upgrade the built in Intel BOOT agent. I did: Boot dos from floppy, Run FBOOT (choose adapter), choose (u)pdate, choose Create restore image" Which actually updated the nic such that it was able to actually work. Kinda bummed that I didn't get to use my rom-o-matic file - maybe I will try that some other day. ^C |

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com (UBCD) is pretty neat. Trying to figure out if there is an easy way to load the whole ting on my pxe booter box (dhcp/tftp server.) I am sure I could take the images one at a time and add them to my /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default but I would rather just add one entry in there that fires up the UBCD menu, which is has several levels: print " [F2] Hard Disk Tools if ($lastKey == key[f2]); then script hdd.scn print " >>> Press [Space] for more harddisk tools ... if ($lastKey == key[space]); then script hdd2.scn print " [F1] Drive Fitness Test V4.00 [F2] PowerMax V4.09 if ($lastKey == key[f2]); then memdisk \images\discwiz.igz Anyone done this? ^Carl K |

hello, ok i have tryed off and on for many years now to get a diskless client.... i've gotten pretty good at linux but i'm NO where near an expert yet. basilcy i'm trying to use a slightly modifed mandrake kernel and intird on my client ( with nfs root and kernel auto conf and the compilied in card drivers ) but i'm getting errors ( kernel panic - not syncing - no init found bla bla bla so i've tryed alot of stuff, even found something at ltsp ( http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/CustomLtspKernels ) about making a custom initrd, well my question is what is needed in the initrd? no one anywhere say's anyting about that, and yes i have searched the archive and all i found was posts saying go read ramdisk and initrd, i did they don't help. what is requied in intird to get a diskless deal to boot? or even more direct, what should i add to my mandrake initrd to get it to boot?.... also is there a decent how-to on ether boot or diskless clients ? i don't mean an old and 'theroy' one i mean one that tell you every step. example www.mythtv.org their how to tells you everything. thanks ps if you need more info on my setup ask.. |

Hi guys, searching the list archive, i found a message about using etherboot to boot vxWorks. I sent an email to Ken, who suggested sending an email to the list. The email i sent him follows. What i need is a way to boot vxWorks using tftp + dhcp. I already have etherboot working for linux and dos, so the problem relies on vxWorks. I studied a bit the mknbi for dos and linux, but they seem quite different, so i don't know if it would be worthy makein an mknbi.vxworks. Anyone has suggestions/tips about that? Would it be possible to make a mknbi for vxworks? Wouldn't be an easier way of accomplishing this? thanks Rafael Hi Rafael, Sorry, I'm no longer working on the Etherboot project. The best place for you to ask is the etherboot-developers list. However if someone has made VxWorks boot using PXE, perhaps the easiest would be to use the PXE capability of Etherboot 5.4.x. Otherwise you would have to make a bootable image from first principles based on what you need to put in memory where to run VxWorks. I don't know how VxWorks wants to be started so I'm no help there. Good luck, Ken --- Rafael Vidal Aroca <raf...@uo...> wrote: > > Hi guys, > > sorry for disturbing. > > i saw a message from you on etherboot-users list about booting > vxWorks using etherboot. Hi Ricardo, > The problem is that the dhcp is a router and i haven't permissions to > configure it,that's why i want to put the tftp setting in the client rom > image. I have the same problem: DHCP-server is off-limit... Set the alternative BOOTP/DHCP port to 1067 (ALTERNATE_DHCP_PORTS_1067_1068 option in Config). Setup a dhcp server which listens on 1067, and an ordinary tftp server and you are set to go. ~Per |

There are 2 you can pick from - not sure if there is any difference: $ man dhcpd.conf The next-server statement next-server server-name; The next-server statement is used to specify the host address of the server from which the initial boot file (specified in the filename statement) is to be loaded. Server-name should be a numeric IP address or a domain name. If no next-server parameter applies to a given client, the DHCP serverâs IP address is used. Not to be confused with: $ man dhcpd.conf The server-name statement server-name name ; The server-name statement can be used to inform the client of the name of the server from which it is booting. Name should be the name that will be provided to the client. In dhcpd.conf: # /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.254 ; } server-name=192.168.1.1; filename="pxelinux.0" ; # eof: /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf I think that is all you need for pxe (you may need other things like "option domain-name-servers" for other things, but you probably already have that in place.) ^C |

Is there a way to have etherboot look to the local hard drive for boot information by way of the "filename =3D " variable one would set in the dhcp server? With PXE there's the config file one can use to setup this up with. default Linux timeout 80 message /boot/message read-only prompt boot /dev/sda image /boot/vmlinuz label Linux initrd /boot/initrd localboot 0 root /dev/sda3 append resume=3D/dev/md1 selinux=3D0 splash=3Dsilent elevator=3Dcfq I'm trying to build some cluster nodes that only have etherboot rather than pxe. I push out a suse linux install like this. mkelfImage --output /root/suse10-64.ebi --kernel=3D/install/suse10-dvd/boot/loader/linux64 --initrd=3D/install/suse10-dvd/boot/loader/initrd64 --append=3D'Install=3Dnfs://172.20.163.100:/install/suse10-dvd/ vnc=3D1 vncpassword=3D*****' I then place suse10-64.ebi in /tftpboot/ Modify the dhcp server like so: Global settings: ------------------------------------------------------------- allow bootp; option T128 code 128 =3D string; option T129 code 129 =3D string; option T150 code 150 =3D string; group { option vendor-encapsulated-options 3c:09:45:74:68:65:72:62:6f:6f:74:ff; option T128 e4:45:74:68:00:00; host n01 { next-server 192.168.0.1; filename "suse10-32.ebi"; hardware ethernet 00:30:48:XX:XX:XX; fixed-address 192.168.0.111; option host-name "n01"; ddns-hostname "n01"; ddns-domainname "company.com"; ddns-rev-domainname "in-addr.arpa"; -------------------------------------------------------------- This works. I set the bios to boot via the network card first. I get my vnc session for the installation. What I need to happen after that is to replace the filename "----" option to load an image that will then boot the local install -- or look to grub on the partition. Is there a way to do this? I tried using different append options but none seem to change the behavior of the boot process. I found on the mailing list someone mention using /dev/hda for filename -- but that doesn't seem to work either. I would appreciate any help on this, thanks in advanced. Regards, Adam Cody |

As strange as it seems the seems to be no connection between a nic device showing up on the boot menu and whether boot from lan is enabled elsewhere. So to summarize, keep looking through the bios and you may fin an additional setting that needs to be enabled. Tim |

I have an HP NetServer lc2000r http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp?&lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=50440&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us http://lnk.to/hplc2000r The bios setup lets me put "lan" as the first item, but the Intel epro 100 doesn't seem to do anything. On a Vectra, I think I had to ^S to get to the nic's setup in order to make that work. I can use rom-o-matic to boot, so everything else is in place. Anyone know what magic words I need to say? ^C |

Hi Try using 1.4.3 on the fedora core 4 machine. If that does not work, it is possible that you are running into a perl issue. There was bug on some systems with perl 5.8 that could be seen when doing this: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 perl -e 'use bytes; print chr(255);' | od -bc LANG=en_US perl -e 'use bytes; print chr(255);' | od -bc The use bytes; is supposed to take precedence over the Unicode preference in the environment. I am not sure if it makes a difference with mknbi but it is worth a look. Tim |

The problem is that the default obviously changed from the current server address to not sending that information at all. This problem has been mentioned several weeks ago, when ISC decided to switch off the next-server default. A pity they did not see that sending this option was a good idea in the first place... As we all know, manpages do not always keep pace with program development, as it seems to be the case here. Regards Anselm |
