You still might be interested in the etherboot.m4 file from jumpwire; it provides a nice, easy way to generate ANSI sequences and DHCP option files (that can be loaded via TFTP using the extensions-path option). > >Dual-Head Range > >We understand that some schools do not have excessively large budgets for computers, whilst at the same >time needing to meet the > National Curriculum requirements to teach children computing. For a long time, we had it marked as "under development" on the site and no-one expressed an interest. Even now that it is not explicitly marked as "under development", we still haven't had anyone actually wanting to buy one. When they do, we'll get it working. :-) For our uses, we only need dual X; it doesn't matter if only one of the "heads" can be used outside of X since our customers will never use them in this way. Ok, I've got the bootmenu stuff loading as an external program instead of running out of the bootrom. So the days of bootmenu code inside Etherboot are numbered since it can be pushed into an external program. However as the default config specifies MOTD and IMAGE_MENU, the new external bootmenu won't be triggered when these are active. So my proposed timeline looks something like this: 5.0.7: MOTD and IMAGE_MENU are taken out of the default configuration. Use is deprecated. Bugs in the bootmenu code are fixed in the external version first. Mknbi 1.2.8: mknbi-menu is released for general use. Maintenance and development of bootmenu moves here. Additional versions that do splash screens and what not are encouraged. 5.2 or thereabouts: Bootmenu code is removed from Etherboot. |

Oh what the heck, seeing as I don't have to work on Monday :-). It's coming up time to do another release as requests have been made for things that have been fixed in the CVSed sources. So I just packaged up what's there and put it at http://etherboot.sourceforge.net/etherboot-5.0.7rc1.tar.bz2 SHA1SUM: 4ee686082f4d2f9b1e45eb45448013a289cb883e etherboot-5.0.7rc1.tar.bz2 It's quite large, about 550kB hence no .gz. (If you don't know about .bz2 perhaps you shouldn't be compiling Etherboot. :-) No guarantees except that it takes up disk space. It compiles for me. It may even run. Please bash it around and report problems to this list. I know there are some warnings about passing char * to unsigned char *. BTW I just did a wc -l *.c *.h *.pl in src/ and there's about 44000 lines of code in there. A lot of it is cribbed from Linux drivers but that's still impressive. I didn't realise there was so much stuff in it now. BTW2 I'm working on making a standalone menu program stealing the code in bootmenu.c, it should be in the next mknbi release (he said, hopefully). |

This feature already exists: see ppmtoansi in contribs and the vendortags documentation. I'm using it to provide a graphical splash-screen bootmenu already: you can see the results in the "jumpwire" package downloadable from www.fensystems.co.uk/[S]RPMs. A word of warning: don't use jumpwire "as is"; it's proof-of-concept code and choosing option "D" from the boot menu *will* destroy /dev/hdb1... If you were a coder you could work on the chaining facikity that allows Etherboot to download a intermediate program which can display whatever it wants and then specify which image to load next and return to Etherboot. See mknbi-menu from the mknbi package. |

Hello developers, i'm looking for an option in etherboot that i can have splashscreen/bootlogo when booting from the net. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be "inside" etherboot - searched the mailinglist archive for that. Could you give me further hints ? I`m concerned with project "netstation" and we would like to have some "eyecandy" when booting from the net. that could give bigger audience ;) To include bootlogo in kernel (LPP / fblogo /fbcon) is a bad option, because bootlogo just would be "viewable" half of the boot-time and to customize - netstation users would have to recompile kernel...... I could think of etherboot downloading splashimage/bootlogo via tftp and display that, while further booting is going on... Currently there is just a "dirty hack" for me: There is an option in GRUB (great bootloader!) for displaying splashimage/bootlogo (via additional Patch) - the ONLY way to have bootlogo at an early stage when booting is: 1. switch pc on 2. Ehterboot-Code being executed from ROM/Floppy 3. Etherboot does dhcp 4. Etherboot tftp`s nbgrub(~100k) from server 5. GRUB starts 6. GRUB does dhcp again 7. GRUB tftp's bootlogo/splashscreen and displays 8. meanwhile, GRUB loads kernel and initrd (maybe BIG ONE - 5MB+) 9. still displaying logo/splashscrenn while kernel starts - kernel-messages can be hidden via Kernel-Param "quiet". Phew, that's really working - but IMHO thats overkill - far too complex - and to much errors to happen... And: the bootlogo/splashscreen is not showing at an VERY EARLY stage, because first, nbgrub has to be loaded, started..... I`m wondering: why not including GRUB splashimage/bootlogo feature in etherboot ? It shouldn`t be too hard to get that code from GRUB.....? There is one problem - i`m very bad coder - so i would like it very much, if s.o. could help ! I`d be happy about some comments. regards Roland |

I specified SHOW_NUMERIC for my etherboot 5.0.6 images - and thus
discovered a bug in the modifier parameter handling: bootmenu.c
says, in selectImage():
if ((i >= 'A') && (i < 'A'+m)) {
i -= 'A';
#ifdef USRPARMS
modifier_keys |= 3; /* ShiftL + ShiftR */
#endif
break;
} else if ((i >= 'a') && (i < 'a'+m)) {
i -= 'a';
break;
} else if ((i >= '1') && (i < '1'+m)) {
i -= '1';
break;
}
Which doesn't account for <shift>-numeric menu items. i.e. pressing
<shift>-<a> presents the Params: prompt; pressing <shift>-<1> does not
(though pressing <shift>-<somekey), then <1> works ok).
Regards,

Thanks for the feedback on the website design so far. I will implement the suggestions. I have just learned there may be several brief power outages here in Cambridge tonight. We got virtually no notice. They claim they need to upgrade facilities to improve service in the future :) I'll need to shut down some servers for the night, but they should be back up by 13:00 GMT 7 June. I may also have to do this tomorrow night ast well (8 June). This will affect rom-o-matic.net and thinguin.org. Etherboot.org should be resolved by secondary DNS. Apologies for any inconvenience. Spiffy! I like it. My only comment is that you should try running the pages through the HTML validator at W3C. I have had good luck with using this service to ensure that my pages are reasonably compatible with most of the browsers out there (although I don't think, your pages do anything exceptionally unusual anyway). Also, if you used style sheets, you wouldn't have to always type in all the font names and you can do neat things such as writing justified text. http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thinguin.org%2Fetherboot_new_site%2Findex.html&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=HTML+4.01+Transitional Marty Connor wrote: > Hello, > > I've put up a new sample etherboot website design at: > > http://www.thinguin.org/etherboot_new_site/ > > All feedback is welcome. > > Notes: > > - Only some of the navigation links work right now because it's not on > SourceForge and not all the files were copied over. > > - It's the same content that is there now, with (hopefully) more > convenient navigation. > > Please post comments and suggestions to the etherboot-developers list, > and hopefully we can update the real site soon. > > Thanks for your help, > > Marty > -- Markus Gutschke 3637 Fillmore Street #106 San Francisco, CA 94123-1600 +1-415-567-8449 ma...@gu... |

Marty, Nice job. I especially like the Etherboot logo that looks like a NIC. But, the word 'Project' is really hard to read. Are you going to get a banner printed for LWCE with the Logo ? Hello, I've put up a new sample etherboot website design at: http://www.thinguin.org/etherboot_new_site/ All feedback is welcome. Notes: - Only some of the navigation links work right now because it's not on SourceForge and not all the files were copied over. - It's the same content that is there now, with (hopefully) more convenient navigation. Please post comments and suggestions to the etherboot-developers list, and hopefully we can update the real site soon. I understand your design goals, but supporting > RFCs where they exist seems like a good idea. I don't expect my protocol to be the end all be all, but simply something good enough to use to today, and something that is good enough the practical difficulties can be explored. The IGMP code, and the multicast support I am coding should be reuseable just like the existing udp stack. > Also, have you looked at http://vaccine.sourceforge.net ? I just looked. The code was never completed, and the paper is wishy washy. Multicast data transfer is simple. There is not a black art to getting something that works. Handling the retransmit scenario is a challenge but getting the common case right is simple. The paper "A reliable multicast framework for Light-weigth sessions and application level framing" is hightly academic and comes to few specific conclusions, and is targeted at conferencing type applications. For network booting, and even host installation the primary target are local networks, doing file transfers. This allows for a lot of simplifications, from the what is needed for real-time conferencing software. In particular you can transfer the entire file without even thinking about retransmissions. Eric, can I encourage you to accommodate RFC 2090, or at least make it easy for others to do so. I understand your design goals, but supporting RFCs where they exist seems like a good idea. Also, have you looked at http://vaccine.sourceforge.net ? |

As an organisation that would be willing to burn ROMs for those needing them: what would users consider to be a reasonable cost? Michael Brown http://www.fensystems.co.uk |

I'm considering setting up a database and PHP form interface on the Sourceforge web site that will list individuals and organisations worldwide willing to burn ROMs for those needing them. Reasonable costs can be charged, but a condition of listing is that the individual or organisation should support Free/Open Software in some way. My questions: 1. Are users interested in such a listing? 2. More important, is there a person with the MySQL and PHP skills willing to register as a Etherboot developer and create the DB? This has been done before; the NIC database was created by a volunteer. |

It has undergone some testing, and it handled 240 clients just fine. There was some usage of TCP that is being converted to UDP, and in doing so it is being made more robust. The testing for the networking booting side will happen as soon as I have a functinging implementation in etherboot. So the protocol is still undergoing refinement. > I'm interested in that protocol, as in the implementation. Tell me > more.... As I get the code completed/committed. Baring problems that should be later this week. Eric |
