Hi,

I think it would be a good idea to make a policy to
change the version number for CVS compiled esniper to
something like 2.$date.

Best regards

Version number comes from configure.in. Do you have an easy
way to automate this, for CVS vs. release builds?

    Hello Scott,

I found a solution on this page:

    http://www.ethereal.com/lists/ethereal-dev/200401/msg00118.html

see the first change to configure.in and the script cvsdate.pl

The code creates a version number cvs.yyyymmddhhmmss if a
    file CVS/Entries exists.
For a release build you have to remove (or rename)
CVS/Entries to get the version number from PACKAGE_VERSION
    in configure.in.

    Hello Scott,

the page I found is a discussion thread. After sending my
message I read a bit further and found some interesting
comments on this proposal. You should read the answers in
    this discussion thread.

After looking at your ReleaseBuild documentation I have some
more proposals: Since you set some variables when doing a
release build you can distinguish between CVS and release
build based on these variables instead of removing the
    CVS/Entries file.
Currently you have the version number in two places:
variable and configure.in file. I suggest to use a script
that extracts the version number from configure.in and
generates the variables for CVS comments and tag.

May I inquire as to what the status is on this request?
