[ES40-developers] Some changes

Hello all,

I've just committed a patch that aims to do the following:

* Avoid the "warning: deprecated conversion from string constant to
'char*'" warnings.
* Actually use the configuration data collected by the configure script.

These changes work without problems on my windows and linux systems,
but if there are any problems on other systems, I'd like to hear of
it.
