One of the problems that I experienced ever since XP SP2 came out was periodic mad disk IO to  the virtual disks attached to my VAX Emulator.

It took about a year of *&^%$^% around with everything that I could think of, but finally I discover the solution to the problem.  I also discovered a thread on a MYSQL forum which talked about the same symptom - sometimes the app goes away and the OS (Windoze) starts writing out to the disk - about a byte for every byte in the virtual disk.

The problem is with disk restore points...

Disable the restore point for the disk and the problem goes away.....

go to

start

right click on my computer
select properties
select the System Restore tab
select the drive holding your virtual disk(s)
click on settings
select "Turn off System Restore in this drive"
click on OK
