We haven't tried running the emulator on anything earlier than Windows 2000. We have run it successfully on Windows 2000 (32-bit), Windows XP (32-bit) and Vista (32-bit and 64-bit).
You might need to compile the emulator from source to run it on any older Windows version, but even then it might not work at all. We'd like to know whether it does or not.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Windows versions that predate Windows 2000 are usually running on computers that are - by current standards - quite slow, and that the ES40 Emulator needs a fast processor to run anywhere near smoothly.
I'll see about changing the OS classification on SourceForge.
Camiel.

I am having trouble getting es40_nn_ns or any of the other 32-bit versions to run on my system, which is running 32 bit Vista on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor. I always get an error that says "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click OK to terminate the application."
Should this work??
I started out with the _nn_ns version as I'd like to avoid as many dependencies as possible at this point. But they all give me the same error.

1. What version are you running; 0.18, or the latest snapshot?
2. If running the snapshot, have you installed the Poco DLL?
3. Are you starting the emulator from a command prompt?
4. Is there any text in the command prompt window?
5. Do you have a valid es40.cfg file?

I doubt I could compile the sources since I've no experience with any C development environment.
PocoFoundation.dll was unpacked from poco-1.3.2-win32.zip and it is in the directory of the emulator's exe file.
WinPcap_4_1_beta2_win32.exe crashes under WNT4 (SP6) with access violation during installation after creating some files on c:\temp, but I guess I don't need WinPCap if I use the nn (no network) emulator.
Yes, a WNT4 system might be slow to run an emulator and also that Poco and/or WinPcap might no longer support WNT4. Currently I do have not have access to a PC with W2000 and later, but I'll upgrade sooner or later.

I wanted to add that my PC is not my primary development system, since I have an alpha workstation and just wanted to check if my OpenVMS application (which is neither memory nor CPU hungry) runs on the emulator.

hello,
unpacked es40_018_win32_no_net_no_sdl_exe.zip
when I start es40_nn_ns.exe under WNT4SP6 I get the error
"es40_nn_ns.exe is not a valid application for Windows"
any help is appreciated.
This seems to be a really cute tool!
Personnaly, I ran only the version with network and had no problem. Maybe you can try this one ?
I tried all emulator 0.18 versions for i386.
all give the same error "... ist keine zulässige Anwendung für Windows"
in a forum I found a hint that maybe
"Windows Installer" Version 2.0 is not present.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4b6140f9-2d36-4977-8fa1-6f8a0f5dca8f&displaylang=en
I downloaded and tried to install Instmsiw.exe
but it said, that it is already installed on my system.
I still get the above error when I start the emulator.
tried to start the emulator under Win98.
Got the error, this program requires a newer version of Windows.
if this can't be fixed, I propose to correct the Operating System info for this project, which currently reads:
All 32-bit MS Windows (95/98/NT/2000/XP)

Hello Galen,
A couple of questions:
1. What version are you running; 0.18, or the latest snapshot?

3. Are you starting the emulator from a command prompt?
4. Is there any text in the command prompt window?

thank you for your reply.
