This now works with ErBot.  I had to add a few obsoleted variable and
function names to erc.el.

Are there any objections to merging this back into CVS head?  If I
don't hear anything by Wednesday, I'll begin this process.  Please
test this branch with your configuration, if at all possible!

There are still some backend improvements to be made, since
erc-backend.el is not yet something that would play nice with (and be
usable by) Circe, but it should be better than before.
