lb-definition would be much clearer if we follow the TEI practice and talk about line beginnings instead of line breaks. This would make things easier, e.g. line@n=1 is always the beginning of line 1, never the linebreak.

NB some procedure for cb pb gb

Suggested new version (without: though the expansion "line-begins" is in many ways a more useful way of thinking about this element.)

line beginning
EpiDoc follows TEI practice in marking line beginnings on the support (as opposed to verse lines) using the lb. lb is an empty element to mark the point at which the line begins.
Because there is no containing element encapsulating lines, any information about the numbering, rendition, or condition of an entire line needs to be marked in an attribute in the lb. For this reason, therefore, it is our convention to place an lb at the beginning of every epigraphic line in the edition, including the first. Any rend or numbering attributes on a lb refer to all text between the current and the following line-begin.

Do TEI now call them line beginnings? w00t (We've been doing that for many years, but at the time there was stiff resistence in TEI Council against doing so.)

100% agree that we should make the text of the GL page reflect this language. Do you want to go ahead and make the changes in the xml? We have plenty of time to tweak and proofread it there between now and the next release.
