TEI has a number of elements that have optional attributes with default values, for example <p> has an optional @part, which has the default value "N". These attributes can crop up and cause problems when copying using XML aware processors, for example, perhaps also in other cases. There are settings in Oxygen and flags in commandline Saxon -expand:(on|off) for avoiding exlicit insertion of default values. However, isn't it sort of strange to have default but optional values?
perhaps TEI will also do something about this. Comments?
This is being gradually done in the TEI by Syd and Martin Holmes, I believe.

#151Thank you, I was looking for evidence in the TEI github with little success as I remember the conversation.
If you search the issues for "defaultVal" you'll see some of the work
that's been done and that's underway.
