database other than freedb

Why is it only possible to use the freedb database?
In the last time it happened more often to me that I did not get any matches on freedb, but there were matches with tools which support e.g. freedb2 (tracktype).
Are these databases working different? Or is it just a matter of enabling to change the URL ...??
