Below is my 2 cents as an enduser, who installed it way back and now is regretting. So a word of caution to all users.
In any software, we expect a minimum below behavior...
1 - It will activate when I ask it to activate
2 - It will deactivate when I deactivate it
I installed enigmail, long way back, around 3-4 years back. During that period, saw some issues of emails which were asked not to be encrypted, getting encrypted, so deactivated it and thought I am over my worries.
I use the draft folder of thunderbird to keep my sensitive information.
Just today, discovered, when I shifted my thunderbird from linux to mac, that enigmail, inspite of having been deactivated, has been encrypting my those emails in the draft folder. And now I cannot recover them as I was under the impression that once I have asked it to deactivate and not encrypt, it won't.
As a developer, CAN I ASK YOU LADIES/GENTLEMEN, what type of developer writes such routines where inspite of enduser asking it not to do, it does, in the backend?
Today, after seeing such behavior of your application and enquiring around with my friends and colleagues and finding all of them are in same quandary, I am ashamed to call myself a developer with you guys also calling yourself developers. Sorry, do not want to be part of same clan.
This is not a complain, but just showing you a mirror and telling you that you might try these underhanded techniques with others. Going to post this message on all Social Media to ensure that other unsuspecting people do not fall into your trap.
My data is gone, but by god, I will make sure others do not suffer the same way.
And let nobody come and preach me about private and public key and to keep them safe, as I explicitly asked your software to not encrypt and it did.
- Really pissed of developers with malafide intentions
