I am trying to help my father set up Enigmail with Thunderbird and he is having a strange error that I cannot seem to fix.
We generated a key pair. He is able to encrypt and sign emails without trouble. However, when I send him a message we get an error that there is no key to decrypt the message. I had him go into account settings > OpenPGP and try to manually set the key to use as well as using the email address to decide which private key to use without success for either.
When he receives a message it will ask for a passphrase but in the window where he is to type the passphrase, it does not display any information about the key (email, key id etc.). After the passphrase is entered, the error is displayed that there is no private key.
Any idea why it would not be able to associate the key with the email address?
Thank you for your time and attention...

If you send your father an encrypted message, which key do you use? Your
father can only decrypt messages that are encrypted for him. That's not
bound to his email address, but to the key. Therefore, did your father
send you his public key, and did you import that key to your keyring?

I was so confused what was going on, it didn't make any sense. It was my fault and I must apologize. I accidentally had two versions of his public key installed on my key ring at the same time and it was using the wrong one.
Cheers
