    Hi, all.
I have the following weird behaviour:
    - If somebody sends me an encrypted email without any attachment, using MS Outlook with GpgOL (Gpg4win) plugin, my email is not decrypted in the preview pane of Thunderbird (I use as my email client on Ubuntu 18.04 64bit Linux desktop). The email is decrypted only if I reply/forward the email!
    - If the received message does contain attachments, instead, decryption is corretcly done!

Really strange... It's not a question of multiple keys associated to the same sender, nor html/txt issues (since sender is using plain text). Of course, with Linux based sending machines everything is fine...

    Thank you for your help,
    Francesco

Can you attach an example message? I don't need to be able to decrypt it.

Patrick, is "eml" format ok for you?

        • Patrick Brunschwig

          yes, that's perfect.

These are Enigmail Console logs in case of, respectively, the first email witout any attachment, and the second one with an attachment.

            enigmail> /usr/bin/gpg --charset utf-8 --display-charset utf-8 --no-auto-check-trustdb --no-tty --batch --no-verbose --with-fingerprint --with-colons --import-options import-show --dry-run --import

            enigmail> /usr/bin/gpg --charset utf-8 --display-charset utf-8 --no-auto-check-trustdb --batch --no-tty --no-verbose --status-fd 2 --log-file /tmp/gpgOutput.tQcr6S --sender francesco.sorice@rcslab.it --max-output 128600 --decrypt

There is indeed a small thing that I could fix during conversion from HTML to plain text to make these messages decrypt correctly.

As a workaround (until the next release), if you view the message as plain text (menu View > Message Body as > Plain Text), the message is decrypted automatically.

      Thank you, Patrick.
Yes, your workaround is ok (even though I loose that way the possibility to see html format I often receive...) and I already tested it in the past.

When do you plan to fix the issue? When is next Enigmail release foreseen for?

      Thank you again,
      Francesco

Hi, Peter. Successfully installed new Thunderbird+Enigmail releases (68.2.1 (64 bit) + 2.1.3 (20191029-1710), respectively). The problem I highlighted has been resolved, but I continue having quite the same with other emails. Can I send you an example, pls?
    Thanks

    Hi Patrick,

I am having the same issue. I have done 2 tests. One test is a normal encrypted email from thunderbird to thunderbird - this decrypts fine with no issues.

However with test 2. I use a simple bash script to send encrypted email to thunderbird.
The only time it will decrypt the email is if i make a message filter in TB and that message filter will decrypt to a folder.
If i do not use message filters and i simply receive this encrypted email from the bash script. i try and decrypt it manually and it doesnt decrypt, even if i right click and Decrypt to Folder. It just duplicates the encrypted email.

In the log file i get the message: gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
Ive attached the logs for you to see. This must be some kind of bug. I even tried to view the encrypted email in Plain Text View.

PS: I never had this issue during December 2019. If that helps? I was able to decrypt message manually when i emailed from the bash script. I just dont remember what version enigmail i was using.

I just clicked on "View in Classic Reader" and i can see the message was decrypted. The problem is the decrypted message being viewed on the actual Preview Pane.

Can you modify your bash script such that would send such a message to me? My email address is patrick AT enigmail DOT net

Yes, where can i find your public key?

Hi Patrick, Sent, please tell me what you find. thanks

  • Patrick Brunschwig

The mail decrypts fine for me. However, I notice that the mail does not have a content-type in the message headers, which could lead to problems.

Do you have any other addons installed apart from Enigmail?

Hi Patrick, sorry for the delay, i needed to test which addon was at fault. it seems when i disabled the addon "Thunderbird Conversations" that it could decrypt as soon as i clicked the mail.
If you want to also (and if you have time) check if "Thunderbird Conversations" is at fault here, please could you try it out and report back ? would appreciate it. thanks
