I am using this with Thunderbird in a Windows environment. I need to encrypt e-mail but the other recipients do not use Thunderbird. How can I encrypt the e-mail in a way that the recepients can open? They need a key but how do they get the key? When they receive my e-mail it never asks for any key.
Does this only work when send from Thunderbird to Thunderbird?

The recipients need to use Enigmail or any other OpenPGP software, generate their keys, and distribute their public key. You can read the basics of public-key encryption on http://www.enigmail.net/documentation/Enigmail_Handbook_1.0.0_en.pdf .
