I installed Enigmail a couple of days ago. During the install it said it needed to install PGP, so I did. However, I know it was already installed, maybe just an older version.
After Thunderbird ran, I can see that a key-pair was created for each email, but everthing revolved around P=P and didn't match the documentation. I sent some encrypted emails and shutdown.
The following day I booted the PC, opened Thunderbird, it had a message saying PGP was out of date? So I clicked to install again which was odd. This time the Enigmail menu options have changed and everything seems PGP based. It has also picked up my original PGP key from when I first installed OpenPGP and Kleopatra years ago.
But here is the problem, my original key from years ago is the only one showing as an option (the only one in bold when I go to key management). I can see all the keys that were created by Enigmail a couple of days ago, but they aren't bold.
Now, if I open Kleopatra, I can see all the keys that were created and they are all bold there.
I've received a reply to one of the emails I sent, and it has the message:
Error - no matching secret key found to decrypt message
I was trying something to fix it and accidentally sent. However, I've identified the problem.
I tried exporting the keys in Kleopatra and got an error that the agent was a different version. So I installed the latest GnuPGP and restarted Thundirbird to get the following error:
Enigmail initialization failed. You are using GnuPG version 1.4.20, which is not supported anymore. Enigmail requires GnuPG version 2.0.14 or newer. Please upgrade your GnuPG installation, or Enigmail will not work.
This time, rather than letting the setup wizard re-install GnuPGP, I selected the location of the latest version. All the keys are now available.
So it appears it was picking up different versions on the system and getting confused. I found a gpg.exe that came with Git for Windows, so I suspect it was that.
