I have a brand new install of Linux Mint 14. Installed Thunderbird & Enigmail.
Generated my key, got a friend's public key, imported it.
Sent my friend an encrypted email, he was able to decrypt it just fine.
However, when he responded, I got "gpg: decryption failed: secret key not available"
I tried deleting my key and reimporting it. I tried changing various settings. But I can't figure out what the problem is. I've used Linux/Thunderbird/Enigmail successfully in the past and never had this error.

I will try that. I know he also just created his key and is relatively new to using PGP. How could he respond to my email with an encrypted response if it weren't for me? I'm fairly certain (will double check) that since he just started this weekend, I'm the only other person whose key he has.

My friend looked into it and it appears he only encrypted it for himself, not me. So problem solved there. However, now when he unchecks himself and tries to choose me, even though he's imported my public key, the check box is grayed out and it says "Recipients not valid, not trusted or not found"
Does this just me he has to change the trust settings and/or sign my key?

Maybe your friend's mail was simply not encrypted for you?

He either needs to enable the option to trust all keys (on by default), or he needs to sign your key.
He finally figured it out, the issue was on his end. Issue resolved.
