    Hello,

I am using Enigmail 2.0.8 in Thunderbird 52.9.1.

When I start typing an email address in the "To:" field of a new message I get that the Enigmail button for encrypting the message automatically becomes active if that email address is one with which I have previously exchanged keys.

So, in case I don't want to send an encrypted mail to that address with which I have previously exchanged keys, I have to click on the Enigmail button for encrypting the message and turn it off before sending the unencrypted message.

This behaviour does not apply to the Enigmail button for signing a message: that button remains inactive even when I type an email address with which I have previously exchanged keys.

Is there a way to change the default behaviour of the Enigmail button for encrypting messages in order not to become active once I type an address with which I have previously exchanged keys? If possible, I'd like to have that button to become active only when I click on it.

    Thank you

    Best Regards

You can change the default for this for each account in the Account Manager under OpenPGP Security. Specifically, you can enable signing of encrypted messages, this will make the "Sign" button behave identically to the "Encrypt" button.

    Thanks Patrick.

My apologies: I was not clear.

What I want is that both the lock and the pen icon remain inactive as the default when I write to a mail address with which I have previously exchanged keys.
I want to be able to manually activate those two buttons myself by clicking on them at my will and not via an automatism.

For the pen icon (signing) I have found the way to do this with exactly the settings you mentioned.

For the lock icon (encrypting) I am currently not able to change the default behaviour which is that the lock icon gets automatically activated when I write to a mail address with which I have previously exchanged keys thus forcing me to click on the lock button to deactivate the encryption (since not all the times I have the need to send encrypted messages to an address with which I have previously exchanged keys; sometimes unencrypted messages are just fine).

Then I suggest you read the "Configuration" section of the user manual, in particular the part about "Sending".

    That worked.
    Thank you once more.
