I've been using Enigmail with Thunderbird and GPG4Win for years now. It always worked as a charm.
However, since I upgraded to version 1.5 I'm experiencing problems with accentuated characters, since these appear as strange (incorrect) characters. This is happening also to the group of people I use to send to / receive from cyphered mail.
describing the same (or a very similar) problem. However, this seems to be a debian list, not a windows one.
The solution proposed int that debian thread is to download enigmail 1.5.1 since it is reported as to having fixed the problem. However, *** I can't find 1.5.1 *** in the downloads area, perhaps because it simply does not exist for windows. I tried to install the last nightly build (16a1pre) without success (this version was not able to find my gpg program, and it even removed my Enigmail settings!).
Is there anything I can do to get accents back?
My configuration:
Windows 7 pro (constantly updated via Windows Update).
Thunderbird 17.0.2
Enigmail 1.5
Thank you!

However, there's no way to update Enigmail correctly!
First, I assumed 1.5.1 would have been uploaded to the Mozilla TB addons server, so I tried to update it simply asking TB to do it. It said: no updates.
Then I guessed that I had to download 1.5.1 from the URL in your post just above. I did it. Then, I deinstalled Enigmail from my TB and restarted it. Immediately, I installed 1.5.1 using the downloaded file. It worked, but...
Enigmail says it can't find gpg. I located the gpg executable for myself (I'm using GPG4WIN) and set its path in the preferences window. No success.
Then I deinstalled 1.5.1 and restarted TB. Then I reinstalled Enigmail from the Mozilla
TB addons web again. Enigmail found gpg without problems at the very same path I used in the previous step. Cyphered mail can be deciphered, so it works. But it is still 1.5.1.
Last attempt: leaving 1.5 installed, I decided to install 1.5.1 OVER the existing 1.5 Enigmail. To do it, I selected 1.5.1 manually from TB's addon manager. Then TB said: Enigmail will be UPDATED at next restart. So I restarted. Got 1.5.1 in my addons list... but, again, the path to gpg is lost (enigmail says it can't find the agent) and setting this path manually is worth nothing.
So I removed Enigmail, restarted TB, and reinstalled Enigmail again from the Mozilla TB addons webpage. It works again, but I'm stuck with 1.5.
Any ideas? This problem with gpg's path also happened to me (see my first post in this thread) when I tried to install the nighly build.
Thank you, Patrick.
José.

I am having this problem. I have 1.5.1. I am not sure about the rest. In Thunderbird it says: Using gpg executable c:\Program Files\GNU\GnuPG\gpg.exe to encrypt and decrypt. Do I need to change something else? I use Enigmail to decrypt incoming orders and they sometimes include foreign characters. Thanks, Gary

I just found this post here:

The correct solution is to use a nightly build of Enigmail or wait for version 1.5.1.
Thank you, Patrick.
I'll wait for 1.5.1. Any hints on the delivery date?
Thanks again for your answer and for this wonderful product!
It was released yesterday. You can get it from

Thank you Patrick.

I'm using Enigmail 1.5.1 and gpg4win myself, and I don't have an issue with not finding GnuPG.
Which version of gpg4win do you use exactly?
Can you please attach a debug log file (see here for how to do this: http://www.enigmail.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=289)?
Patrick,
thank you for your answer. I'll answer your questions next monday, when I come back to my office where the computer with the problem is. In the meantime, thanks again!

Patrick,
this is my configuration:
Windows 7 pro (constantly updated via Windows Update).
Thunderbird 17.0.2
GPG4Win 2.0.1
Do you think I should upgrade GPG4Win? I have just checked that 2.1.0 is available...
Thanks!
Yes, I would recommend you upgrade to v2.1.0.
Sorry! I forgot to append the log.
By the way: the log states that my gpg4win has been found. However, when I try to decypher a message, I get a warning box stating that the gpg program couldn't be found. Moreover, the preferences window says the same...
Quite weird!
Thanks again.
Patrick,
deinstalling GPG4Win 2.0.1 and installing 2.1.0 SOLVED THE PROBLEM.
Now Enigmail works as well as it always did!
Thanks!

Gary, did I get this correctly: you get mails with garbled foreign characters? If yes, it's most likely that the sender is still using Enigmail v.1.5.
