Hi, I tried installing Enigmail on Thunderbird 68.2.1 on Windows 10.
Setup wizard happily installs GnuPG, but then gets stuck saying something like "examining your environment" (I translated this from German). There was no notable activity (like CPU load) for about half an hour. I finally re-started Thunderbird. Now Enigmail seems to be installed, but not fully configured. I cannot send nor receive encrypted mails. Any ideas?

Thank, Patrick. Unfortunately, I don't have the option to restart the wizard. Enigmail menu only offers "Manage keys" and "Settings".
Also the path to creating a debug log differs from the description. See attachment - hope this is what you were looking for.
I'm not sure if we talk about the same menu. I get the impression that you opened the Enigmail menu from the Message Composition window, but I'm talking about the menu from the Message Reading window. If you don't see the menu, just press and release the "Alt" key.
Your debugging log doesn't help me, as it does not contain any traces of you trying to run the setup wizards. You really need to 1st run the setup wizard, and then create the log file.

Thanks, this log is a lot more interesting. I see that something happens in the wizard, and I believe that I see that the scanning process gets stuck. I assume you have more folders than just Inbox and "Archiv"?

Yes, definitely. I tried again today and let the wizard run for two hours to absolutely make sure I'm not too patient. It got stuck at the same point.
You say it gets stuck somewhere around folder "Archiv" as this is the last mention of autoSetup.jsm in the log - is that right?
What exactly is being scanned for - I guess the folder size can not be an issue (about 250MB in 3500 messages)?

The wizard is supposed to walk through the last 30 days of all your emails, in order to find out if and how you used OpenPGP encryption before. The idea is that, based on this information, the setup wizard would then propose you the most suitable option for how to proceed, such as importing existing keys, creating new keys etc.
But unfortunately, it seems tha the function in Thunderbird that Enigmail uses does not work reliably. I'll have to find a better mechanism for this.

Hi, thanks for the script...unfortunately, it did not work out.
The script tried to import a key for an old mail-account which I don't use anymore (@gmx.de and I can't even remember using GPG with this account, not to speak of the passphrase). The passphrase which I had used all the time for my current account (@gruene-rlp-de) does not work. So the bat-file cannot read the secring.
Do you have any idea what I could do?
The bat-file could read the keyring successfully. But as you don't remember the password of the 1st key, GnuPG stops, and won't import any further keys. There is certainly a solution for it, but I'll have to find it. Wait for my next post (probably not today anymore)...

Here we go. I think I have a solution that should work. Please try the attached file. Again, save it and double click it. At the top, you should see some lines like this:
Yippiieeh!! Thank you so much, it worked!
Unfortunately, Enigmail does no longer ask for donations, so I donated to Thunderbird instead.
Is there anything else I can do to express my gratitude?
Happy new year!!!

Can you please try and start the setup wizard again (via menu Enigmail).
If the wizard gets stuck again, then please attach a debugging log file (see https://enigmail.net/index.php/en/faq-en?view=topic&id=15).
You can also create your keys manuall via the Enigmail Key Manager -> menu Create -> New Key Pair.
Thank, Patrick. Unfortunately, I don't have the option to restart the wizard. Enigmail menu only offers "Manage keys" and "Settings".

Hi Patrick,
thanks for your patience. I found my issue described here: https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/forum/support/thread/6fc3b6e3/
No idea why the setup wizard stopped, but manually enabling Enigmail in account settings seems to fix it for me. Thanks!
Still it would be interesting why the wizard gets stuck. Is this debug output more helpful?

Got the same problem...wizard gets stuck and I can't sign mails. Have attached logfile, hoping for help...thanks in advance!
Your debugging log file does not contain any trace of using the setup wizard.
But I don't understand yet what you try to achieve - did you install Enigmail for the first time, or did you try to upgrade Enigmail or GnuPG?
Oh sorry, I was not aware that I had to try running the assistant again. Which I did now, see attached logfile.
I have been using Enigmail for more than two years; the difficulties started after the GnuPG update some days ago.
Thank you so much!
All the best, Jutta
I see. I created a little script that automates the GnuPG upgrade fix.
Save the attached file to your computer, and double click it. It will try to re-import your keys from the old GnuPG setup.
And thanks for the debug log file, this helps me fixing the apparent issue in the setup wizard.

Don't worry, I stopped accepting donations hoping that people either donate to Thunderbird or GnuPG - so you did the right thing.
Happy New Year :-)
