I have some PGP encrypted messages in my old inbox, but also lots of S/MIME ones (no PGP/GPG added). I think I read somewhere that while Enigmail does not handle the S/MIME decryption itself, it could still be used to permanently decrypt such messages by choosing either Decrypt to Folder or using the decrypted copy filter function. Alas, neither of these seems to have the slightest effect. Nothing is decrypted and nothing is copied as far as I can tell. Did I misunderstand?
I am running TB 60.9.0 (64-bit) on Linux Mint
Enigmail 2.0.12
Same issue under Windows 10.
Decrypt to folder does work as expected on GPG encrypted messages.
Cheers
Ben

Enigmail does not handle S/MIME and cannot decrypt S/MIME messages. The "decrypt permanently" function was originally written such that S/MIME messages were also handled, but that was a pure side effect of the chosen implementation approach.
Unfortunately, the functions in Thunderbird used by Enigmail did not work reliably, such that I re-wrote the functionality to decrypt permanently entirely. But the new approach does not work anymore with S/MIME.

One more thing as those encrypted legacy mails bug me quite a bit: Can you tell me which was the last Enigmail version where Decrypt to Folder still worked on S/MIME? I might set it up in a VM to hopefully solve my issue.

No luck with 2.0.10. So I installed TB 45 and Enigmail 1.8.2 on a VM. Still the same result. Neither the decrypted copy nor direct decryption filter seem to have any effect on my S/MIME messages. No matter whether in local or in IMAP folder.
I guess I'll just give this up.

Too bad, but thanks a lot for the prompt reply.
