I am trying to maintain an Email-system of a friend who can't write encrypted emails any more.
He can receive and decrypt emails, but encryption is not working any more.
There are more curiosities in detail that show that this system seems to be hacked.
So my first try was to deactivate and active Enigmail again without no result.
After that i made an system upgrade of the installed Debian 8.11 (jessie) without no result.
Then i made an reinstall of the packages of Thunderbird and reinstalled Enigmail without no result.
I have always this typical symptoms:
So someone has done something so that encryption of emails is not possible any more and at this time i have no idea how this was done?
The problem is that i don't want to kill the configuration of Thunderbird with the email settings and all the stored emails at this time.
I think it would be interesting to find out how this hack is working?
Now - after the next reboot the eMail works again as usual.
Hmmm - the solution seems to be to open an bug ticket :-)
I think this can be closed.
Now you know about such problems ...
Sorry you had trouble and glag your friend's mail system up and running again. With debian 8 you need to make sure to install thunderbird AND enigmail packages from the repo since debian (and especially non-current version) contains older versions that might not always be compatible with the latest version from our website. Also, in this case it might even have been a binary incompatibility issue if both repo and web package were installed alongside. In general, it's better to report on forum/mailinglist first and only to file a bug if it's confirmed there that it is one.
Thanks for your response.
I can say that the above combination of Thunderbird 52.9.1 and Enigmail 2.0.8 is working good.
I am using Debian 9 too and there is no problem with Enigmail too.
After security upgrades it is possible that you have to deactivate and activate the Enigmail-Plugin if problems occur. But this time it was really suspicious what has happened.
