No

Usually, the info line from Enigmail was positioned above the area with the info about email contents and the reply buttons row.
Now it's on the left side, with the rest squashed together and partially hidden outside the window, and thus the buttons became inaccessible.

It's probably just a CSS issue, but I'd be grateful for any hints, as I cannot currently use encrypted emails without having to enlarge the Thunderbird window beyond the screen width (well, or learning the keyboard shortcuts...)

I did disable my custom CSS, and it still looked like that (except for the colors).

With Thunderbird 52.9.1 on Linux Mint 18.3, happens only since a couple of days.

I'm not sure it's a problem caused by Enigmail or Thunderbird, since I have last updated them some time before the problem started. Maybe some incompatible library, or a Chromium update caused it?

There was an update of Enigmail to version 2.0.8 on Monday. Since Enigmail is a restart-less addon, the update happens silently. The major change I made was to move the Enigmail header above the control buttons pane instead of below.

From what it looks like from the screenshot, you modified something with the toolbar. I can't tell if that's from another addon or if you just did that with CSS.

What find suspicious in your screenshot is the "+" icon on the left side of the cyan box. That should definitely not be there. You may want to try to disabe other add-ons to find out which one does not work correctly with Enigmail, or you might want to delete localstore.json in your Thunderbird profile directory (with Thunderbird stopped). The latter will restore the default view on all TB windows.

Thank you very much, Patrick, that was it.

I had all forgotten about the 'Compact Headers' Addon (https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/compactheader/) (rarely used the option it provided, plus it looks like it might no longer be maintained anyway). After deactivating it, it looks correct again.

Hmmm. That's quite a popular addon. I'll have to think about how to fix it.

Thank you! That would be even better of course (on my old 4:3 screen it doesn't matter much, but on standard screens, it makes a real difference).

Just for additional information: The problem is also there in Thunderbird 60 with "Compact Headers"
