Hi,

I encountered the problem, that Thunderbird freezes for a certain amount of time if I try to open (i.e. read) an E-Mail with an encrypted E-Mail attached.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Enable the option "Store drafts encrypted"
  2. Create a new e-mail (#1), store it as draft
  3. Create another new e-mail (#2) attach e-mail #1, send it to yourself
  4. Open e-mail #2

Result

  • Fan enganges -> one cpu core temporarily has 100% load
  • Thunderbird freezes for a certain amount of time, sometimes it recovers, sometimes not

    • if it does not recover, an error message appears:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

  • examples for non-responsive skripts (they vary):

    • Skript: chrome://messenger/content/mailWidgets.xml:448
    • Skript: chrome://messenger/content/msgHdrViewOverlay.js:640
  • e-mail #2 is seemingly some hundred times (exact number varies, e.g. 694) attached to e-mail #1

Tests

  • tested two e-mail adresses at to different e-mail providers (same result)
  • it has no effect to toggle "download attachements only if they should be displayed"
  • it does not matter if e-mail #1 is encrypted or not
  • it does not matter if e-mail #1 or e-mail #2 have a subject or contain an actual message
  • if I attach an encrypted file, the problem does not occur
  • if the attached e-mail is not encrypted, the problem does not occur

Additional Information

  • Thunderbird starts to freeze after I typed in my GPG-Passphrase, i.e. after Thunderbird tried to decrypt the attachment
  • e-mails are composed in plain-text format, no html

edit: improved formatting
