On both Windows (8.1) and Linux (Mint 18.3) the Enigmail field in the message pane gets re-enabled - after one has disabled that field - upon Thunderbird restart. See the attachment to see the field I mean.

Whether or not the column is displayed is defined by Thunderbird. Enigmail simply provides the content for a column. The behavior works fine for me. That said, the reason for this is most likely not a bug in Enigmail but a corrupt Thunderbird profile.

You can probably fix this the following way:
    1. quit Thunderbird
    2. locate to your Thunderbird profile
    3. delete the file xulstore.json

Following your suggestion, on Windows, (i) removed all my taskbar icons, (ii) did not solve the problem.

However, the fact that this problem started, on two computers, immediately after an Enigmail update - and pertains to an Enigmail column - does make me suspicious.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused. Your screenshot displays the columns (which is what I was referring to), and now you talk about icons? The icons have no relationship to the columns.

How do you "disable that field"?

I wrote of icons because, as I said, your proposed fix did something to them. But, yes, the problem is with a column/field - one that I am not able to permanently disable. I disable it - try to disable it - thus: I right-click somewhere in the column/field (I don't know which to call it) view, and then deselct the Enigmail field. Yet, upon reboot, the column returns. I hope this description of the problem is clear (and it is, so far as I can tell).

Is it different it you use the little icon at the right end of the last column? Clicking on it should display a list of all columns and allows you to (de)select the columns you want to see.

No, that makes no difference. Moreover, disabling columns other than the Enigmail column works. So: my original bug report stands; this very much seems to be a problem with Enigmail.

It's more than strange because the column is not even enabled by default.

Do you use any other add-on, apart from lightning?

That's quite a long list. I suspect that one of them somehow interferes with Enigmail.

I'd recommend you disable all and check if the Enigmail column still is not persistently removable. If Enigmail is ok, then try enabling the other add-ons one by one until you find the culprit.

The incompatibility turns out to be with Toolbar Buttons (codefisher.org/toolbar_button). So: does the fault owe to Enigmail, or Toolbar Buttons, or Thunderbird, or to some combination?

It's hard to tell. But as the column is not enabled by default in Enigmail, I don't believe that the bug is in Enigmail. Enigmail is just loading the column into Thunderbird.

OK, I'm closing this ticket for now. If there's any change, just reopen it.
