Enigmail adds an extra couple of newlines at the end of every signed message it sends. I notice this because I often need to send form letters that are all slightly different, which I do by sending one message, then selecting the message from the Sent folder and running Message->Edit As New Message, changing the message slightly, and then repeating the process. After a while the newlines really start to pile up at the end of the edited messages.

The problem does not happen with unsigned messages. (Though maybe it happens also for encrypted messages; I did not test this.)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Message->New Message
  2. Make sure that the message will be signed (Enigmail->Sign Message) with PGP/MIME (Enigmail->Protocol: PGP/MIME).
  3. Enter a recipient, a subject, and some text.
  4. File->Send Now
  5. View the sent message from the Sent folder (or from the receiving e-mail account's inbox).

Observed behaviour:

  1. Two extra newlines appear at the end of the message.

Expected behaviour:

  1. No extra newlines should appear at the end of the message.

    Did you try this with Enigmail disabled?

    From what I can see, Thunderbird adds 1-2 lines to the end of a message, even if Enigmail is disabled (tried with plain text, not HTML).

    Yes I did. The problem does not occur when Enigmail is enabled but the message is not signed, nor when Enigmail is disabled.

      Is this because Enigmail's functionality has now been integrated into Thunderbird?

    Yes. Enigmail has entered Extended Support. I will continue to fix major and disturbing issues, but I will not fix cosmetic and minor problems.
