Would it be possible to change the font of the update confirmation dialog to something that is able to display German Umlauts?
Maybe you could use Linux Libertine accross the entire application. It's clean, it's Open Source compatible and it has one of the most extensive character sets of any font available – and therefore avoiding similar problems with even the most unkommon writing characters in the future.
PS.: BTW, why is this dialog in German even if I am using English as an interface language?
The dialog is in German because that's a message that comes 1:1 from GnuPG. I assume that your command line is in German.
I have made quite some effort to get the Umlauts correct. Please attach a debug log, and I can check if I can improve something or not.
Well, my console is not in German (as far as I know – the entire OS is supposed to be in English and that's also the language I enter when prompted on App install). But anyway: If I save the log file to disk, it's saved in ANSI, not UTF-8, so the symbols for the broken letters aren't even included in the file (maybe that's also something you might want to change).
As for the log, I would prefer not to attach it here where everyone can download it. Do you recieve mail on your SF email redirect (and do I find a public key for that address on a public keyserver)?
I'm not interested in the locale or encoding of the log, but in the content of the debug information that detects the system locale and character set encoding. You can send the log by email to patrick AT enigmail DOT net.
The character set detection did not detect the charset correctly. I fixed this now.
