Hi everybody, K3b version 0.12 has ben released. They have maid some amazing improvements on the audio part of the project. Also, take a look at this (extracted from their website): [...] K3b is now split into three parts: * libk3bdevice provides the low level device handling and detection including an implementation of big parts of the MMC standard. * libk3b provides all one needs to write CDs and DVDs along with all the project types but without all the GUI elements used in k3b. * k3b itself, the main application providing the user friendly GUI we all know. This allows other applications to link against the k3b libs to simply include CD/DVD writing support. Be aware that the API of both libk3bdevice and libk3b are highly unstable and I cannot even guarantee source compatibility before the 1.0 release. So if you want to use one of the libs it might be best to link them statically for now. [...] It's a pitty we don't use C++ (their libs are written in that language). I post this one just to let you think about it... let me know what you think. For further info, visit their web at www.k3b.org. Doesn't libk3b/libk3bdevice require Qt, though? That would veer away from the no-required-DE design ideal. yes i agree... i htink it does require QT and some other kde libraries.... and it would have to be *really* amazing to impress me.... because i have been less than impressed by k3b thus far. The 'setup' is flakey and it requires alot of phat bloated libraries to go along with it.... and well.. it looks like kde IMHO what we are doing here is providing users with a choice.... A good choice.. not a half baked wierd un-friendly choice.... i say we press on. im totally against anything requiring QT or any KDE library. my 2 cents On 6/15/05, Jesse Rhodes <j.v...@gm...> wrote: > Doesn't libk3b/libk3bdevice require Qt, though? here is a snippet from their 'requirements' page /* paste */ # KDE >=3D 3.2 - KDE is the great window manager, the powerful desktop, the very powerful c++ library K3b is based on, and a lot of programs. # QT >=3D 3.2 KDE 3.2 requires the QT library version 3.2, a cross-platform GUI development toolkit. Since K3b is a threaded application QT needs to be compiled with threading support enabled. # cdrecord/mkisofs - Cdrecord creates home-burned CDs with a CD-R/CD-RW recorder. # dvd+rw-tools - The DVD+RW-Tools are used to burn and format DVD+R(W) and DVD-R(W) media. For DVD+R Double Layer burning version >=3D 5.20.4.10.8 is required. /*paste*/ it looks as if though it might be tough to break it out from that... and dang man.. i spent the last several days learning one language... if at all possible id like to stick with it for a bit.... unless you have a reason that i cant think of as to why we should switch gears... i say we press on my friends :) ChEEzE On 6/15/05, CoolChEEzE <coo...@gm...> wrote: > yes i agree... i htink it does require QT and some other kde > libraries.... and it would have to be *really* amazing to impress > me.... because i have been less than impressed by k3b thus far. Hey, Well, as far as I understand, Qt is only used for the GUI, not for both of the libs (libk3b and libk3bdevice). Anyway, I only posted that news to show you where K3b guys are headed, just in case we need to take a look at their code. Don't worry, cheeze... we're sticking to C :) (although I think that if we finally switch to C++ It would only take you a week to adapt, anyway lol) Greets, David. -- David Lago <dl...@mu...> PGP key available at: http://pgp.mit.edu Personal Blizog: http://arcanelinux.org/blog/dlworld The Enflame Project: http://enflame.org |

Hey, We should probably try and think of something out of the ordinary to make enflame more unique :) I agree, K3b is too much like KDE and I'm not really fond of KDE for some weird reason (for one, the looks turn me off). Well it's pretty hard to think of good things to include that no one has done before since we are quite limited to the cdrecord interface. I think dlworld a while ago, suggested a network burn which is a good idea - and/or we could have a mini-web feature that downloads an .iso from a LAN/internet and automatically burns it for the user. Or another feature where the user can "pile" up several burning sessions into one, instead of having to burn one - then get ready to make another iso, burn that one and then get ready for another - not really revolutionary but could be a nice feature for those who like to get their hands messy at the start and just insert blank cd/dvds after every burn. I don't think k3b has a previewing feature of the ISO being generated (they have a simulation but I don't *think* the user gets to see the actual contents of their ISO), so we could have that which is simply mounting an iso via loopback onto a mount point in /mnt (this could be /mnt/cdrom to make it feel more "previewish" or can be a user-specified mount point). Or we can have more user-friendly guidelines, for example when installing the program make sure they have SCSI emulation on for their IDE drives, if they don't have it on - still let them install it but just give a warning and how to turn them on. I found it frustrating when I first used k3b and could only burn at a 0.3x speed because I forgot to put on SCSI emulation and took me a while to figure out I needed the emulation for it to work properly. Hopefully we can add better and cooler features than the *aheM* competition :) Well I got exams at the moment, so not really active but when I finish hopefully I can get something done :p On 6/16/05, CoolChEEzE <coo...@gm...> wrote: > lol ... okay man... they have a lot of features that we have > planned... and i rekon a look see at the code might help some :) gotta > love OSS :) >=20 >=20 >=20 > On 6/16/05, David Lago <dl...@mu...> wrote: > > Hey, > > > > Well, as far as I understand, Qt is only used for the GUI, not for both > > of the libs (libk3b and libk3bdevice). Sup, Well, I think Wilan is right.... we sould add new features, features that nobody has implemented yet, to make this program an attractive choice. Maybe we should do some kind of brainstorming, an collect ideas from other people. But remember, first aim is to make an usable, user-friendly recording software. New features will come, of course, but lets first focus on making it usable-consistent-stable. agreed... lets take small steps... make something stable and usable... with some quality behind it. heres my 2 cents on this matter there are LOTS of people out there that install the kdelibs just because k3b is really the only full featured choice that even half way works like its supposed to. think of how many users we would have if we *just* made it comparable in features. ALOT of people would use our software if it would just burn iso's ... do audio and support projects. our pull for users stems from the fact that we will not require a phat set of libraries to use it... truth of the matter is *if* all the efl libraries are required ... they are very small compared to having to drag kdelibs or even gtk2 along with it. this will be a huge advantage to people who use E or flux or xfce or whatever alternative wm they like... heck even people that use gnome will have a good choice without the need for the dreaded K*. i agree with the fact that we should think of unique features. but i dont feel we should push the matter in the beginning. We have already seen alot of interest in this software for it to be so new and not even released yet. I think we are on to something... many others have tried to make something usable but most have failed or they simply stopped releasing new versions. if our feature set is equal to k3b... our software is still much greater than theirs because of the way we chose to implement those features by giving users a choice. well thats enough ranting for me=20 ChEEzE On 6/16/05, David Lago <dl...@mu...> wrote: > Sup, >=20 > Well, I think Wilan is right.... we sould add new features, features > that nobody has implemented yet, to make this program an attractive > choice.
