Well, I found another competitor to Java 3D and JOGL: LWJGL (http://lwjgl.org/). What I instantly liked was the Java Web Start demos that worked right out of the box with my 64 Bit Ubuntu 8.04 Linux OS. And it's whicked fast! :-)
