Define "mass scale"?  50? ...200? 5000?

I have not, as of yet, implemented a live working environment using 
EncFS yet.  I would be interested as well in some benchmark performance 
tests to see how cpu vs ram affects EncFS' performance if anyone has 
done any tests yet.

On top of your questions I'd ask:

How intensive is it to open/close new instances of an EncFS.
Where is the biggest bottleneck? memory, processor, or disk
Does EncFS slow down with each new instance opened concurrently?
